The Inland Revenue Board's (IRB) tax revenue has grown from RM60.3 billion in 2010 to RM112.3 billion this year under the administration of Prime MInister Najib Abdul Razak, claimed PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.

IRB has recorded an average of 11 percent growth in tax revenue since 2010, he said in a statement today.

This is considerably high, especially so when the country only recorded five percent economic growth in the same period, he said.

"This showed the people would not be able to feel the increase in their wages and the business people would not be able to appreciate the sudden increase in their profits.

"The wage increment of Malaysian workers were among the lowest in the region, so it is impossible for many of them to pay a higher tax," added the Pandan parliamentarian.

"Najib's administration should reduce personal income tax and company tax after the goods and services tax (GST) was introduced. The tax collection too should not have increased in such manner," he said.

Citing the tax collection in Australia, he said the tax revenue only grew 5.3 percent in average from 2011 to 2016, which is half the growth achieved in Malaysia.

"That's why I am sure the tax collection and audit operation by IRB to hunt down ordinary people, the artists, professional groups, civil servants, or collecting tax dues even after the death of the tax payer, is caused by the excessive spending of Najib's administration," the lawmaker alleged. 

"I believe the 11 percent tax revenue growth from 2010 to 2017 is partly due to audit operations where old files have been opened," he added.

"I will look into the existing law and discuss with other parliamentarians to consider setting up a task force to look into the tax audit operation, which can victimise the people," he said. 

"I will announce a remedial action in the near future," he said.
