DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has assured that a Pakatan Harapan federal government would abolish all toll charges on the Penang Bridge.

"If you vote for BN, only the toll charges for motorcycles will be abolished on the Penang Bridge.

"If you vote for Harapan, once we take Putrajaya, all toll charges on the Penang Bridge would be abolished," said Lim, who is also the caretaker Penang chief minister, wrote on Twitter today.

Lim's response came a day after BN chairperson Najib Abdul Razak pledged to abolish toll charges for motorcyclists on the same bridge.

Although there was no specific mention of the Penang Bridge in Harapan's manifesto, it does contain a pledge to nationalise highway toll collection, with the purpose of removing toll booths in stages.

The coalition argued that present highway operators are benefitting from lop-sided contracts and many are still benefitting from government subsidies.

"We believe that providing basic infrastructures, such as roads and highways, is a responsibility of the government for the rakyat.

"A Harapan federal government will take over the concession agreements, with fair compensation to the companies concerned," read the document.
