PKR POLLS | A Selangor PKR leader today claimed that some 30 people were prevented from voting at the PKR Petaling Jaya Utara division this morning after they were allegedly found to be carrying military identity cards.

Bukit Lanjan assemblyperson Elizabeth Wong told Malaysiakini that the discovery was made at around 10am by officers in charge to check identification of members before being allowed to vote at the Bandar Utama multi-purpose hall.

"There were three groups of 'military people'... I reported all of them to the (defence) ministry," said Wong who alleged the attempts of bringing in "phantom voters" in her division.

She also described them as being "young guys" with a "military look".

Under the Armed Forces (Terms of Service of Regular Forces) Regulations 2013, members of the armed forces are prohibited from taking part in active politics.

According to the law, a serviceman found to be involved in political activities as prohibited in the Perintah Majlis Angkatan Tentera could be discharged from their duties.

Malaysiakini has contacted an aide to Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu who promised to check on Wong's report.

Wong, who won the PKR Petaling Jaya Utara division chief post uncontested, further alleged that there were other "phantom voters" discovered this morning comprising PKR members from other divisions in Selangor.

"I guess because it's high stakes now. Emotions were running high.

"All this while Petaling Jaya Utara (division) is very peaceful," she added.

Commenting on the reported commotion this morning, Wong confirmed that seven PKR members were taken away by the police. 

"They were using 'fake (party) IDs', so straight away we knew," she said.

Aside from Petaling Jaya Utara, claims of phantom voters were also reported in Selayang and Rawang divisions.
