Investigate Mahathirs new citizens

The EC, immigration, police, the NRD and the former deputy home minister have much to explain, says a reader.

On EC rolls padded with Dr M's 'new citizens'

Thai Eng: Dr M's 'new citizens' must be fully investigated. The parliamentary select committee must get to the bottom of this serious issue. It looks like the EC (Election Commission), immigration, police, the NRD (National Registration Department) and the former deputy home minister have much to explain.

We just cannot have the mass importation of "citizens" and padding of the electoral rolls. Malaysiakini must also play its part to continue highlighting this issue. Remember to repeatedly ask Tun this the next occasion malaysiakini gets to interview him.

Phantom: I believe that NRD officers involved in the alleged 'Project Mahathir' were detained under the ISA. ISA was used to prevent these people from spilling the beans. They were not charged, just cold storaged to borrow a term reminiscent of Ops Cold Store in Singapore. If they were charged then names would be mentioned. Even if judges can be bought by the government, such an action is calamitous for the executive/BN federal government.

If you read the Likas petition, the matter was raised in Parliament but was not answered. I think the issues raised in Likas have not been resolved. Why? The Likas case shows the EC for what it is and has been for a long time - a BN stooge.

Sad Sabahan: Dr M is the biggest abuser of human rights. He abused Sabahans from 1985 to 1994 and as if that was not enough, he sold our beautiful state to foreigners. He has no shame . He was the judge, jury and executioner.

On Another VIP with outstanding traffic fines

Cheah: I think Malaysia is the only country in the world which gives discounts for late settlement of traffic summons. Instead of penalising these traffic offenders who settle their summons late, they are actually being 'rewarded'.

The decision of the collecting authority defies logic. Perhaps, they are trying to tell traffic offenders that it is in the latter's interest to not duly settle their summons. Better still, accumulate as many summonses as possible to get a worthwhile discount.

On Moorthy saga: Appellate court to decide on jurisdiction

Shufiyan: How humans complicate things! A deceased person's body should be given to his/her next of kin (there's nothing more sad than being buried by strangers).

If the deceased was a Muslim, but is 'disposed off' in some other religious fashion, what should it matter? If indeed he was a Muslim, but cremated according to Hindu rites, then Allah swt will accept him as a Muslim in the hereafter. Who are we, mere mortals, to decide if one is a Muslim or not?

Exhume the body and return it to his family. We should respect the living and surrender our faith to Allah. Doesn't Islam mean submission to the will of God? Allah swt will 'will' it as He will.

As the widow's lawyer said: "It is important to the appellant too... there is a Hindu body lying in a Muslim cemetery". And that's an equally horrible thought for Muslims too...

On Pak Lah annoyed, Samy angry

Taxpayer: Dear Pak Lah, every Malaysian knows that you are the leader of the democratically elected party that rules the country. But as one of your employers, who gives you the permission to simply spend the rakyat's money so wastefully that the only person who might be laughing his way to the bank is the contractor.

Bridge or no bridge, the contractor got their hands washed clean and their pocket full. They kept mum while the politicians are battling their way out of the holes created by the 'incompetency' of the people who manages the rakyat's money.

Or is it?

Before PAC starts asking the minister in charge of the project about negotiating the amount of compensation to the contractor, perhaps PAC can begin by questioning how the contract was initially awarded instead. Ministers must realise that gone are the days when they can simply spend money as if it (the money) belongs to them. They have to learn to be more prudent in spending and not using the word 'millions' or 'billions' so loosely and be boastful about it. (Darn, I hate it every time I hear one celebrity minister do that on the national TV). Have they got the apprehension on the magnitude of the money of that amount?

The cost-benefit analyses have to be weighed against the rakyat's interest and not anything else. I mean, not anything else. Period. I believe one can easily find the true definition of 'rakyat' I found the DBP (Dewan Bahasa and Pustaka) has a very detail and interesting explanation of this sacred word. Not to my surprise though, there was no particular political party or individual names mentioned in the definition itself. But then, do the politicians, particularly the arrogant minister really know this?

One can feel the growing anger and frustration from the rakyat towards the weaknesses in your administration. Everyday, more stories come unfolding reflecting your weak leadership and crumbling integrity. These cannot be restored simply in days.

Pak Lah, for the interest of the rakyat, and the nation that we all loved, please do the right thing... step down, honourably.

Dhammika: Any candidate called up by PAC must comply with the request. After all, it is PAC's responsibility to Parliament. Samy Vellu's refusal only show his recalcitrant behaviour. Written reply is not professional and unacceptable. After all, he is not facing Sebastian of 'Hard Talk' TV show. Samy Vellu is so eloquent and I am sure he can handle PAC with no sweat. Why is he against the interview if there is no grey area in the Johor bridge project.

I am sure there are discrepancies otherwise why should PAC waste the precious time. For accountability sake, the PM must make sure that it remains a supreme instruction that he is present on the appointed day. The PM has been very lenient and every minister tries to take advantage of his good nature.

Hooi KL: Who are the people behind the main contractor for this half-bridge project? I am quite sure the Toms, Dicks and Harries cannot possibly get mega-project of this size and at such favourable terms. Especially the part where they don't have to work and get compensated.

On Gas prices to go up too

Muttaqin Othman: The negotiations must not only take into account the price structure for supplying future electricity, but also the excessively high IRR (internal rate returns) on the IPPs' (independent power producers) investment for the entire period. Merely negotiating future price would mean the IPPs will keep their ill-gotten gains up to the renegotiation point.

As the stocks of the IPPs are expected to suddenly become somewhat unattractive, we hope government funds would not end up buying those shares from Tun's cronies at an inflated price. We have experienced that already with Plus, and motorists end up paying through their noses for the RM8 billion bond Plus took out at the height of the financial crisis to pare off Renong's debts.

To add insult to injury, the government then merrily increases the toll every three years, telling the rakyat that the move will bring more taxes to government coffers for the benefit of the rakyat.

On Temples: DBKL pledges to listen first

Jimmy Q: Where are the so-called champions of the Indian community who sits in the BN? Though their internal party election may be taking place, I, a non-Indian, feel pity for their common folks who have leaders who make promises after promises but when it comes to going down to help the poor, they do nothing but only lip services.

Wake up! Your people need your assistance, especially at this trying times with their only salvation being demolish due purely only to technical grounds, i.e. the structure was build on government land and without prior or proper approval. And as for those in authority, where is the compassion that their religion teaches them?

Truly Malaysian: It is politics again! Here MIC and Hindu Sangam try to get their act together to do something worthwhile and noteworthy for the society (at least in KL). Trust me this is not because they are a force to reckon with but out of necessity. If they have been a force, the local government would not even ventured into such activities without consulting them as they are recognised bodies of the government and so-called representatives for the Indian society.

Necessity, because the very essence they stand for has been totally sidetracked and ignored so far until some organisation called the Hindraft comes into the limelight and highlights the issues to the masses without political and monetary resources.

Are we talking about survival of the fittest? This is the beauty of the media magic ( malaysiakini ) and the new trend that cultivates amongst youngsters today. It has no barriers with humanity and people being the cause, provided the wisdom is there.

Knowledge let us learn and live but wisdom is what makes one's life fulfilled.

So MIC and Hindu Sangam, are your goals political, knowledge or wisdom? You are the bearer, so you decide. No condemnation meant, just that why are you so late in the game?

On MIC veteran accuses Samy of money politics

Sathiabalan: It is not a big deal to say that the current MIC president practices money politics. What is the big deal? After all, it is an open secret. In fact, this matter should be raised by the delegates who have voted the president which includes the CWC members. Unfortunately, the CWC members are a sack of potatoes who have no guts to question the party leadership. The CWC members are just making up the numbers in the meeting in order to pass a resolution without even debating on it. Correct me if I am wrong to say that there will be a full turnout on June 24 of all the delegates since refreshments are free for the day.

Anyway, look at who is talking about money politics. Just because you have an axe to grind since you have been dropped from the CWC, you are being vocal now. Instead you should have voiced out this grievances many, many years ago but why now? The very fact that you were aligned with the president all this while and you have decided to remain silent on this matter. Looks like you are also a culprit and not to mention a sour loser.
