EC chief, try a little honesty

Bersih's revelation of election improprieties confirms what many Malaysians have felt as they go to the ballot boxes, says a reader.

On Bersih to EC: Here's the proof!

Ah Chong: Bersih's revelation of election improprieties confirms what many Malaysians have felt as they go to the ballot boxes. We boast of integrity but this clearly shows the lack of government's honesty when such blatant improprieties exists. Even the Election Commission chief knows himself as he confessed briefly to malaysiakini a few years back. Nothing has been done since.

There is no fair fight for the opposition with the media blackout of any positive opposition news, gerrymandering of constituencies and the unfair practice of the EC. Is there any wonder why we have had the same political party in power for the last 50 years. It is not their good governance that keeps them there.

EC chairman Abdul Rashid must stand before the Almighty God and the people of Malaysia to say that he has faithfully upheld the Constitution of Malaysia by providing free and fair elections in Malaysia. I hope his conscience is not scorched beyond repair. If he cannot, then it is time he steps down.

On Cops need more than a rebranding exercise

BA Choo: Bravo Fahri Azzat! You certainly hit the nail on the police head. I can only conclude that the IGP has his actor brother's public relations ability. I remember in the good old 50s and 60s when the local police personnel took the trouble to pay widows of deceased policemen a visit once in a while especially during 'poppy day'.

I further recall how the detectives, notably the secret society branch and special branch, played their undercover parts to effectively curb and prevent crimes. And the FRU were fantastic with their night patrols. Heard of the 'Salleh System'? The Sikh police were a respectable lot! The police band was world-class playing their theme song for the world to hear. What happen to our policemen of today?

The criminals today only know too well how the police patrols operate and maybe the indifferent morale existing in the police force. I am sure retired police personnel will fully agree that the good old days when the 'mata mata' were law enforcers is indeed a thing of the past.

How sad we have to face such a situation... I hope and pray that the IGP walk the talk. I am sure the public will gladly contribute to the police development fund (if there is one) generously if the police do their job efficiently and diligently.

On Assalamualaikum, Middle Eastern-style

Kashminder Singh: I've always believed that the truth is found in the Source; not in the interpretations of narrow-minded people. With regards to the question of who can greet who and what greetings are to be used in whatever permutation one can imagine, the Quran is very clear.

"And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet with a better (greeting) than it or return it; surely Allah takes account of all things." S. 4:86

So dear non-Muslims, please go ahead and greet our fellow Muslim brothers. Use Assalamualaikum too, if you wish. A true Muslim will not fail to respond to your greetings.

By Stander: Scott South asked the right questions and the answer to that is that it is the manifestation of a group of people who feel very, very insecure about themselves.

This small segment feels that the rest of the world is superior and being human after all (pun intended), they will cling to, and claim, their exclusive right to a small part of life, just like some will claim title to a professorship or to a piece of property. Wanting exclusive use to protect their own insecurity, they need to protect what they perceive is their domain.

Clouded by other issues, these insecure people have lost all sense of the word's original purpose.

On Shame on you, MPs

Thong: First, it was the toll agreement and now this. This is what our MPs are good at ... close one eye! After all, Malaysians have short memory, they would not remember this issue soon enough.

Instead of taking action against our 'white collar criminals', we are seeing another case of a whistleblower being punished. White collar criminals are protected as long as you are a member of BN.

Shame on you, MPs.
