Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) has voiced its support for Parti Keadilan Rakyat's candidate Khalid Ibrahim after a social contract was signed between them in Ijok today.

Khalid signed the 'MTUC Workers and Trade Unions Demand Charter' with MTUC's secretary-general G Rajasekaran at PKR's media centre in Batang Berjuntai.

By signing the charter, Khalid has agreed to be committed in several causes in improving quality of life and offer better protection for workers.

Among others, these include:

  • better protection for workers and those made redundant

  • a fixed eight percent Employees Provident Fund dividend
  • a minimum of RM900 for all sectors; housing, education and health rights
  • the abolition of oppressive laws such as the Internal Security Act, Sedition Act, Police Act, Universities and University Colleges Act and the Presses and Publications Act.
  • Through the charter, Khalid has promised to fully support workers and their unions.

MTUC, with some 500,000 members, has also called for all workers to vote for Khalid who is a 'friend' to them.

"Khalid is a dynamic leader who is always forward looking and aspires to fight for better quality of life for workers," the charter read.

MTUC president Syed Shahir Syed Mohamud said the organisation will support Khalid after endorsing the charter.

The workers union with 15 member delegate also accompanied Khalid around the plantation area in Kampung Ijok in the afternoon.

"Tan Sri (Khalid) was well received by the people amongst Guthrie plantations group," Syed Shahir said.
