Safe decision on Joy prior to elections

It is not the right time to ruffle feathers but whatever Lina Joy may be labeled, it's the allegiance of the heart that makes the difference.

On No joy for Lina

Meng: This is expected as it is the safest judgement especially prior to a looming general election. Not the right time to ruffle feathers. Anyway, whatever she may be labeled, it's the allegiance of the heart that makes the difference.

Many are concerned about the externals, the labels, the physical and the form. I believe only Lina knows where Lina's heart is and if that is not love of a religion, then what is?

Peace to you Lina and like your newfound name, may you find inner joy amidst the trials and tribulations.

R Rama Chandran: Under the circumstances of the religious extremism has taken shape in this country, the 2-1 majority judgment delivered by the Federal Court appears to be an ideal compromise though Article 11 of the Federal Constitution has been blatantly violated.

Imagine if the decision was otherwise! There will be thousands on the streets today protesting against the Muslim judges, labelling them all sorts of names. I was really surprised that the extremist groups had organised hundreds of people to surround the court premises and chant prayers.

But the judges preempted and defused the situation. The government must take cognisance of the sort of development that is heading towards fanaticsm which can be very dangerous in a multi- religious society like ours.

With this judgment, Lina Joy should give the Syariah Courts a try. Let the Syariah Court judges in their enlightenment see that Joy should not be forced by law (whether civil or religious) to remain a Muslim against her conscience which is not good for Islam itself.

Let wisdom prevail in her case as the world is watching this good nation of ours. Let us show the world that we are matured and developed in all aspects of life.

On Al-Arqam: Remember that non-Muslims kept silent

Pt Tan: We non-Muslims should speak out, especially against the little leaders that are prevalent in the community who try to change and dictate to others what to do, with no basis except their own invented ideology.

We should not wait till they have grown big and powerful before we speak out against them.

On Incidents that followed May 13

MS: Tropong Negara's letter lends credence to Dr Kua Kia Soong's findings on May13. He then ends by saying he needs his friends so let it be. If he can reassure us non-Malays that we will not be sacrificed again at the altar of expediency by Umno's political animals fighting their ambition, we can, of course, let it be as only an aberration.

The sad truth is there can be no such reassurance more so as a number from the perpetrators have risen high up, with one even managing to become a PM of lasting tenure. And largely during his tenure, he entrenched religion as the supreme law of the land with compliant judges.

You want to be friends, Tropong? Stand up for your friends who were sacrificed and are now suffering injustices in the name of religion. Then tell yourself you need friends of other colours and faith if there is an earnest desire for fair play. Until then investigate and castigate those who seek to drive sharpened wedges to divide.

On Report fails Pak Lah over human rights

Munn Zie: Our poor and pitiable premier has failed the test benchmarked by a human rights group, after repeatedly straggling far below the passing mark in anti-corruption and anti- cronyism.

Despite the promises made during the last general election, he continues to live under the dark shadow of the hardened societal and political ills left behind by his predecessors. Time after time, he has been pathetically shattered by his inability to do a proper house-cleaning of the less than transparent government already irrevocably smothered by dubious official figures and blemished reports that have been fast morphing into a new Malaysian culture.

Calling for an early polls to look for a fresh mandate is not the solution. The reason is while he may still remain as the commander-in-chief in name, he may not garner sufficient support in his own party to exercise his full power to fulfill his pledges. And then, history will reiterate itself.

Where lies the future of our country?
