Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan's tenure was extended for two more years because he has all the qualifications to head the police force.

In a parliamentary written reply, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz explained that Musa's tenure was extended after taking several factors into consideration.

"The most important one is that he is working very hard to fight all sorts of crime that is happening now," he said.

"I am determined to maintain public safety and I discovered that Musa also has the same commitment to fight crime without getting tired and bored of it," he added.

Nazri (BN-Padang Renggas) was replying Lim Hock Seng (DAP-Bagan) who asked the prime minister to state the reason why the government extended Musa's tenure.

He also wanted to know if the extension indicates that there is no other police officer as talented as him.

Nazri, explaining that Musa has all the criteria needed by an individual to head the police force, said: King Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin has assented to the appointment based on Prime Minster Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's advice.

"Based on his (Musa) credibility, integrity, commitment and experience, I believe that he could bring changes to the police force," he said.

"This is very important because it is government's determination and intention to see PDRM transforming into a more efficient force that is free from corruption," he added.

Nazri also explained that Musa's tenure was extended because the government believes that "an individual needs adequate time to transform an organisation he or she heads".

"As such, Musa's tenure was extended with the intention to give him enough time to deliver consistently," he said.

Musa's tenure was extended for two years on Aug 17, three weeks after he was cleared by the attorney-general over allegations of corruption.

The Anti- Corruption Agency launched a probe against Musa over allegations that he took RM2 million in bribe to release three criminal suspects held under the Emergency Ordinance.
