Terengganu riot: Who is lying?

The onus is on our leaders to clarify the situation and return the good name of the people of Terengganu as early and as fair as possible, a reader demands.

On Power shouldn't 'come from barrel of the gun'

Ibrahim Musa K: I just can't believe it. My hometown, Kuala Terengganu, a peaceful and harmonious place ever since after the Japanese Occupation, has turned violent overnight.

The people of KT are calm and reticent, living a simple yet satisfying life. Now the sound of the few bullets fired by the police have completely shattered the tranquility, and the ugly bloodshed has tarnished the friendly image of the beautiful town.

Why did the police need to use guns in a supposedly orderly protest? Or was there a hidden government agenda as claimed by the opposition?

No brutal force should be utilised against anyone in a democratic country, least of all by the police. At the moment, things appear to be quite disheveled and thus easily subject to speculation especially by those with vested interests. The onus is on our leaders to clarify the situation and return the good name of the people of Terengganu, as early and as fair as possible.

Jane Abdullah : If it is worth another reminder, then we are reminded of the need to set up the IPCMC.

Suhakam might note that unless the police clean up their act (again and again), a free and fair elections is not going to happen this time despite their Malaysian Human Rights Day message. Police use violence at any cost like the beating up the Indonesian karate referee without any provocation save that he is an Indonesian national. How insane and bigoted is that? Every Indonesian is 'prima facie' an enemy of the state? Like every opposition activist?

Malaysian police might like to learn a thing or two from Indonesian police who are trained never to provoke an assembly much less shoot at its own citizenry. Several incidents involving police and public protests from Aceh to Iran Jaya confirm that Indonesian police have come this far. Indonesian police are undergoing human rights training and education in a serious manner.

The IPCMC is not something to be traded for. It is a basic requirement and we need it now - not after the next GE. It is a campaign promise unfulfilled by BN. DPM Najib Razak has also extended IGP Musa Hassan's appointment. We do not know what the trade-off for that is.

What is clear is that we will not see the light of the IPCMC under BN rule. We must police the police and we have agreed that the IPCMC will be the mechanism for it. Let this feature well in our consciousness when we vote.

YSM: It's amazing that policemen are so highly trained that they are able to shoot two people with a single shot as said in the above report. They should be given a medal for saving on bullets. It also must be election time meaning 'tis the season for tarnishing the opposition's image. There will be more such tricks when the election draws nigh.

His Majesty The Yang Di Pertuan Agong, who is the Sultan of Terengganu, should step in to conduct an investigation into the chaos which erupted in his state. It is most unfortunate that the FRU had to resort to such violence against unarmed members of the public.

On Motion to debate 'bloody' ceramah rejected

KSN: What a 'brilliant' Speaker we have. The opposition is saying that the riot was instigated by the police as it was only a very simple gathering of few hundred people.

And our Speaker says, 'It was just a riot'?

Good 'show', Mr Speaker, sir. Just like how you rejected the motion to debate RM4.6 billion of public funds going down the drain. Keep it up.

On Protest held over MPS' dog-hunt

Hanna Fushihara: I am a Japanese citizen living in the United States. I am totally appalled by this inhumane and disgusting solution to an animal-control problem. There are many other alternatives including sterilisation of street dogs which would lower the population of animals for years to come and not just for now. Asking non-professionals to cull animals for prize money is horribly dangerous not only to the animals but also to humans.

How will you be able to tell whether or not these people have caught real strays or if they have stolen them for the purpose of winning the prize money? There are so many better ways to spend the money to actually reduce the numbers of strays on the streets. Please stop this cruelty and stupidity immediately. I will tell all of my friends to tell their friends and so on to not travel to Malaysia or buy Malaysian products till this is stopped.

Ngo Thye Aun: I urge all Malaysians to put a stop to this barbaric act towards the non-humans. Please remember this action will affect the name of our country which is searching for peace and harmony among different races. The world is now watching this barbaric action. Please do take note.

Theresa: It is just plain cruel to do this to stray dogs. Why is it that they can do this to a innocent animal and yet criminals go to jail for their crimes and get a roof and three meals a day. You would rather go after stray dogs who have done nothing but just want to be loved. They are not criminals. Your government is wrong.

L Ng: Well, this is a perfect example of Malaysians with Third World mentality but living in a First world facility. Well done on your barbaric act, Majlis Perbandaran Selayang! You've just put all of Malaysia to shame by your stupid act!

Gin Greenwood-Warner: I do not for one second believe a modern advancing country such as yours would possibly contemplate such a competition. It must be a totally bizarre rumor. However, it is traveling around the world and will affect tourism. There are millions of people including myself who will not visit a country which violates animal rights so please advice whether this ludicrous competition is fact or fiction.

I sincerely hope that you have in place a spaying and neutering programme to ensure stray animals do not breed further and are able to live out their lives without fear and cruelty in any form.
