Emasculated judiciary - Dr Ms legacy

Emasculated judiciary - it's Dr M's legacy. And it will live long after he has departed from this world.

On Nazri: Because I'm his minister

HL Too: Since Dr M is so fond of quoting Shakespeare especially from Julius Caesar, let me use another Shakespearean quotation which is perhaps appropriate for the occasion.

The evil that men do lives after them (Julius Caesar III.ii.75).

The emasculation and corruption of the judiciary would be one of the legacies of Dr Mahathir that this country would have to inherit. And it will live long after he has departed from this world.

Given Up: The scandalous tape is surprising only to the extent that one aspect of this farce has been videotaped and is now available for public viewing. That the selection and promotion of judges has been been following 'such established procedure' as confirmed by the tape' has long been common knowledge in the legal fraternity.

In these circumstances the statement by the minister concerned that a commission to appoint judges will only be considered if judges ask for it seems absurd. Why would anyone want to change the very system that appointed or elevated them?

Why would the CJ want to give up his powers in appointing and promoting his subordinates. Who in history has given away his powers voluntarily? Well ,the chickens will come home to roost one day if they are not already here.

Harpajan Singh: The next level of the latest judiciary saga is as follows:

  1. Lingam denies everything

  • CJ denies everything
  • The maker of the video and Anwar are accused of tainting the judiciary and the government
  • The maker is charged
  • ACA and AG close files
  • General election comes, people forget the 1-5 listed above, and yet again vote for the BN
  • Repeat all the above for all forthcoming elections
  • Malaysia Boleh.

Ahmad Kamal: What an unintelligent response from Nazri to say that 'I am his minister' when issuing a denial on behalf of Fairuz.

A judge is not accountable to a minister. A judge is accountable to the public. The duty of the press is report matters of public interest and journalists are duty bound to find out the truth of the matter. A judge may not be answerable to the press, but it is the duty of the press to press for justice.

The system of checks and balances are in place to ensure that the three arms of government perform their constitutional roles. Parliament checks the Judiciary, not a minister. It appears that Nazri had inadvertently exposed the truth that some of our judges are not independent and that they do answer to particular ministers or ruling parties.

Dhammika: It is now common for Najib to answer for the PM. It has been more than 24 hours and not a comment coming out from the PM. Tun was different during his time. This is a serious matter and I am sad to say that the pm has lost his accountability, authority, leadership, responsibility etc. Remember that he enjoys the mandate to run the country well with respect and dignity.

The whole administration will follow this example of their leaders. Stop finding loopholes to seal the leakages. More is expected to roll in. The whole administration is rotten to the core. Be responsible to answer and for god's sake take some corrective action to demonstrate that you are indeed serious.
