I am happy to learn the truth about the supposed cause of the Petaling Jaya Selatan clashes ([#1] Incidents not related to racial clashes [/#], March 20). I have been extremely worried about the fate of the hundreds like Jantan Amat who have been remanded.
I certainly hope the police themselves will act professionally in questioning those in remand. We do not want to hear of any stories of witnesses being turned over by police so that their reports will not produce versions that may be questionable or lead to further misunderstanding on the issue. I propose that those who have complaints of police 'misbehaviour' make an immediate report to Suhakam without fear.
I wonder if the Selangor Bar had provided any assistance to those arrested and remanded or to their families. The fact that hundreds have been arrested alone is cause for alarm. Perhaps malaysiakini should ask the new Bar chief, Mah Weng Kwai, if lawyers, whether in Selangor or Kuala Lumpur, are providing urgent assistance to those arrested. After all, the new chief was reported to have stated that the Bar would be more activist-orientated ([#2] Sulaiman out, Mah is new Bar chief [/#], March 17).
After all, the Kuala Lumpur urgent arrest team was extremely helpful to bewildered orang kena tahan (OKTs) and their families towards the end of 1998 till 1999.
