National schools must change first

vox populi big thumbnail ‘If national unity is the ultimate goal, then honest thinking must lead one to the conclusion that national schools are among the key institutions to bring this about.'

On 'Umno revenge against MCA, Gerakan'

G Thomas : I do not agree that the call for vernacular schools to be closed is ‘revenge'.

Such a description trivialises a proposal that may be radical, but one that is also substantial and logical, for the better or worse of Malaysians in general.

If national unity and ‘Bangsa Malaysia' are the ultimate goal in this instance, then honest thinking must lead one to the conclusion that national schools are among the key institutions to bring this about.

Yes, national schools, not Malay schools masquerading as national schools.

The character of national schools must change, starting with their staffing.

Headmasters, teachers and bureaucrats, in that order of priority, should be hired and deployed on merit, not on the basis of political loyalty and I-know-who.

Hiring policies in the peninsula should aim for 40 percent of the staff to be ethnic Chinese and Indians.

Merit should also be a criterion to balance the social engineering objectives of curriculum design.

The curriculum should be revamped so that subjects related to national history and other identity issues tell the truth and the whole truth. Education requires nothing less.

The education portfolio in the federal cabinet should not be the property of Umno, but should be assigned to politicians with vision, knowledge and management calibre.

Let these be done and, given the enormous financial clout the government can bring to bear on creating excellent schools, then the Chinese and Indians, and indeed the Malays, will naturally gravitate towards national schools.

On Mukhriz: Close down vernacular schools

Kiv T: I cannot believed such words can be uttered by Mukhriz! I was actually hoping he will win the Umno Youth contest because he is the best candidate among them...well...the best among the worst, I mean.

Please, do your home work before uttering such nonsense to gain political mileage. I believe it is a tradition for Umno Youth to play the racial card to win votes because its in their nature to do so.

Najib has done it before when he was in Umno Youth. Hishamuddin has done it before and everyone saw in on TV. Now the frontrunner in Umno Youth race did it - even before winning the race.

Make it compulsory for all government servants to send their children to government schools if you think the schools are so good.

Are your children in a government school Mukhriz? Do a little survey among all the MPs, please.

I guarantee you will be shocked to find out how many of their children go to private schools.

Actually, it will not be shocking news as everyone knows about this. Shall we have a little wager?

CK:

All you readers, you all have misunderstood Mukhriz and accused him of saying ‘closing down vernacular schools'. Please read his further explanation on the matter below:

‘The school remains the same physically and it is the system that needs changing where the medium of teaching would eventually be one, which is Bahasa Malaysia, except for science and mathematics.'

It also sounds like:

  • One can choose to go to the wet market to buy pork but there will be no pork but chicken because the stall remains the same physically and it is the meat that needs ‘changing'.

  • One can choose to have a drink of beer with friends at the bar or pub but there will be no alcohol.
  • Only soft drinks because the pub remains the same physically and it is the drink that needs changing.
  • One can choose to smoke cigarettes but there will be no tobacco inside but only herbs because the cigarette remains the same physically and it is the content that needs changing.
  • Like Father Like Son: By calling for the closure of vernacular schools just when the Umno elections are around the corner shows that the son is as cunning as the father.

The son knows very well and is obviously not bothered that there will be the usual reactions from the Chinese and Indians.

This is because he knows the characteristic of Umno Youth members and that is the more flak he gets from these two communities as well as opposition MPs, the better his chances of being elected as the Umno Youth chief.

If before he was leading in the race for the coveted post, he now has a stranglehold on it, just by pulling the emotional trigger of his party members at the right time.

It is the same devious and racial tactics that brought down Tunku Abdul Rahman who was accused of looking after the interests of the Chinese and neglecting his own race.

No wonder our Bapa Malaysia never ever forgave the cunning father.

On Don't blame IPPs for energy woes: group

Garry Khoo: I'm so ‘proud' of all Malaysians who can afford to make these 13 companies become multi-millionaire companies.

All the IPPs totalled a net profit after tax of approximately at RM810 million a year.

If we eliminate them, after five years, we can use the funds to build bullet trains all around the peninsular and MRT in around all major towns.

What a waste of national resources to benefit only 13 companies.

On Nude squad to stalk S'gor MB over rent hike

Em Ze: What does the law, both common and syariah , say about being naked in public?

If it is alright, then let them do it.

If it is not, stalk them (in returm to them stalking Khalid), catch them in the act and punish them right away.

    Good luck to every one.
