On Samy's challenger reinstated

SOS: It is mind-boggling how out of touch MIC has become. Former vice-president M Muthupalaniappan who was booted out of the party last week, has been reinstated. And now grassroots leader KP Samy who was sacked from the party last January for openly supporting Hindraf, has also been welcomed back with open arms.

Does the party and its top echelon of leaders believe people care about this childish game of political musical chairs? Well, in case they are all living in a make-believe world, allow me to provide them with a much needed reality check.

No, we, the people on the ground could care less about all the politicking that is going on! A Kugan was killed while in police custody, B Prabakar was tortured with hot water and his friend C Solomon is still missing. These are only some of the issues plaguing the Indian community, and yet MIC is more interested in petty party squabbles! Stop the shenanigans!

Have the leaders of MIC been so damaged by the March 8 General Election that they have lost all sense of reality and their sanity? Please, for the love of the community, listen to us, the people you claim to be fighting for. Stop all this needless politicking and fight sincerely for us and our rights in this country.

Yes, we might have shown almost all of you the door at the last general election, but if there is still no improvement in your attitudes, all, and I mean all of you will be booted out the next time. Aren’t you people ashamed of talking about positions in the party when MIC is dangerously close to becoming irrelevant?

And to the two men mentioned earlier, if you are serious about helping the Indian community, maybe it would be a better bet to do it from a different platform. This aged, decrepit, tired, infirm party needs to be put out to pasture.

Yuvan: MIC and its leaders have already lost a lot of support. This kind of ‘drama’ in MIC will create more anger and uncertainty and MIC leaders can rest assured that the party will forever lose whatever remaining support and relevance it has in the Indian community here.

Samy Vellu should know that there is not just one Muthupalaniappan but many Muthupalaniappans in MIC who want challenge him. But since MIC has lost its respect and dignity, most of them have lost their ‘face’ and do not want to waste their time and go through the drama of being ridiculed, threatened, hauled up by the disciplinary committee, sacked and then reinstated.

The CWC members in approving the reinstatement of Muthupalaniappan should not feel that they were magnanimous in their decision. They should know that all this was just another ‘show’ and the time, energy and resources spent on these matters could have been put to better use in serving their community.

On Ku Li: Umno leadership is part of the problem

Karo: The rakyat is in the mood for change. It's clear that Umno is on its way out. At the current rate things are going for Umno, what with member defections and repeated beatings at the polls, it has a high probability of being voted out at the next general elections.

Such are the political sentiments of Malaysians today. The majority of Malaysians no longer support Umno because the party is perceived as being arrogant, racist, corrupt and out of touch with the rakyat . If Najib was to call a snap poll after taking power in March, there would likely be only one outcome.

However, a wise man once said, "Problems are only opportunities in work clothes". Umno's current political crisis is also its greatest opportunity to break away from its outdated politics.

How can Umno stay relevant to Malaysians and show that it is sincere about turning over a new leaf?

Merge into a single multiracial party with MCA, MIC and its other political partners, to effectively represent Bangsa Malaysia.

Abolish ISA and close the Kamunting detention centre immediately, to ensure that Malaysians can never again be held in detention without trial.

Abolish the NEP, or failing that, ensure in a transparent and accountable manner that the NEP is carried out as per its original purpose to benefit all Malaysians.

Implement transparent measures to ensure that Malaysia has an independent judiciary to check and balance the powers of the executive and legislative branches.

Can Umno change? Of course it can. Umno is made up of people and people can change if they really want to. The writing is on the wall, Umno.

The people have spoken, "Change, Umno, or the rakyat will change you."

On Experts: Was Kugan drowned?

Jr Lee: Malaysians are now very puzzled as to who is actually telling the truth. In the Kugan case, the police who interrogated him denied any foul play and attributed his death to water in his lungs. It was only the quick action of Kugan's family to immediately inspect his body which later revealed possible foul play.

Later, the Selangor police chief Khalid Abu Bakar accused Kugan's family and 50 others of storming into the mortuary in which his body was being kept. But it was Kapar parliamentarian S Manikavasagam's DVD recording taken at the mortuary that revealed the truth.

The police the seized the DVD from the MP. Many Malaysians are now worried that the DVD, which is the only piece of evidence that can vindicate those accused of barging into the mortuary, will be tampered with by the police.

Then, there is the accusation by an Umno leader of assault, abuse and threats while he was detained by MACC officers. MACC then counter accused the Umno leader of making a false police report.

If only our Malaysian police, MACC and all such agencies adopt a practice of recording all interrogations on videotape, as practised in the US and a few other countries, will the truth be easier to uncover.

It is indeed very terrifying to think of what can happen to our loved ones when they are detained by the police. Only by putting into practice an unbiased system of recording interrogations will Malaysians be assured that our police force will not abuse their loved ones when they are detained.

Appum: Is Malaysia in such a severe conflict situation where 'enemies' and 'captives' are abused with physical violence to gain information? However, even during war times there is the Geneva Convention stipulating ways and methods in handling enemies and captives.

Looks like our Malaysian authorities are not counselled in methods to deal with interrogation. Or they are mere barbaric "tai kors" who will do anything to solicit whatever information they want.

That is why we need more restraining institutions like the IPCMC as far as the police and other investigative organisations are concerned. But why are we not able to form that body when a Royal Commision has recommended that formation?

The police force is a civil service entity paid for by the taxes of the rakyat , how can they object to such a fair recommendation? If the officers cannot stomach such a commission then leave the force, we don't need ruffians in the force.

In Hong Kong, when the anti-corruption agency interrogates a person, the whole interrogation is video-taped and is made available to the subject interrogated. How's that Malaysia? Can we do that for a start?

On Something wrong about Syed Hamid

Lilian: Syed Hamid should be booted as Home Minister – he clearly does not believe that a person is innocent until proven guilty. Kugan may well have been involved in a crime or crimes, but the Malaysian police had no right to assault, torture and kill him.

Likewise, evidence may point to the fact that Altantuya was a blackmailer, and maybe an accessory in some shady deals – but it does not justify her abduction and subsequent blowing up.

Truth is, our nation has sunk to such a level of unlawfulness that even the basics of justice and fairness no longer apply. If we are not yet afraid, we should be... very. No one is safe, anyone of us could be the next victims of the people who killed Kugan.

The only way to protect ourselves is to take a stand for positive change, by voting Barisan Nasional out in the next elections.

On Q&A: Fernandes pours out his frustrations

G-man: I think the criticism channeled at Tony Fernandes is unfair as he did what any other businessman would have done, the self preservation of a company he built out of nothing into one of the best known airlines and companies in the region and the world for the matter.

In Malaysia we all know that business and politics are intertwined and its like the proverbial troll (politician) that guards the bridge and if you want to pass, you have to pay the dues. I am sure Tony Fernandes is not the only prominent businessman who was seen during the campaigning trails for the last general election.

All this also because he is 'believed' to be associated with a soon to be political out-cast. I am sure level headed people can see through all that and realise that the reason for the LCCT

in Labu was to further spur the growth of Air Asia, the company and the people.

If Tony Fernandes and Sime Darby want to go ahead and build the Labu terminal, let them as they should be able to do what they want with their money. Its not like they are using funds from government coffers.

I say enough with the 'protection' that the government is giving to Malaysia Airports and MAS. Its a tough world out there and its about the survival of the fittest.
