Martin Jalleh's Anwar: Let humaneness rule argues that '... from the legal perspective (based on an assertion by Suhakam, three years ago) Anwar has the right as a patient to make an informed choice about which medical treatment he wishes to undergo' and that '... there are no relevant prohibitions under Malaysian law' disallowing him to travel abroad to receive the recommended specialised medical treatment.
Nothing can be further from the truth. Anwar whatever the circumstances that led to his present predicament is a convicted prisoner denied bail by every court he has appealed to thus far.
He is entitled to the best medical treatment in the world provided he is in the custody of the Prisons Department of Malaysia throughout.
Due to obvious jurisdictional limitations, he cannot be kept under the custody of the Malaysian Prisons Department if he steps out of the territory of the Federation of Malaysia.
