I'm writing in response to the report PAS slams court's decision on Muslim headgear .
First of all, I have to admit that I'm not familiar with the circumstances of the case. So my comments are based on some assumptions on my part. Secondly, I have to state that the banning of headscarves by the French government is a bad move and more importantly, wrong.
However, I think comparing the Negeri Sembilan case to that of France is like comparing apples and oranges. The main difference is that school student in France do not wear uniforms unlike those in Malaysia.
So I'll agree with PAS if we do not have uniforms for our school students. If memory serves me right, the wearing of uniforms was rigidly enforced in my secondary school. Students without uniforms were usually not allowed into the classroom unless they had a valid reason or a written note from their parents.
I don't think there should be a special unregulated situation for Muslims. However, having said that, I believe there is a version of the Malaysian school uniform nowadays which includes a headscarf for female Muslim students.
So I think it may be a okay for schools to come up with a version for male Muslim students. Of course, when this happens, we are potentially opening up a floodgate of demands from students of different racial backgrounds and religious beliefs.
I'm not saying this is a bad thing. To me, the whole school uniform wearing thing is not really necessary. What is needed is a decent dress code similar to that of a code of conduct. That should be enough.
