When I read the article ‘Selangor says MPK never approved fireworks display’, I was deeply disappointed. I am sorry, I think the Selangor government, the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and the Klang MP are wimps.

Look, it was a celebration that went wrong. Like Murphy’s Law says - “whatever can go wrong, will go wrong". Why is everybody suddenly trying to avoid responsibility? The fireworks was organised by MPK. At least I expect everyone - Klang MP, the municipal council and the state government to own up and standby those who are presently being investigated.

Let’s face it; you people are fully aware of the event. So please don’t pretend as if you are completely blameless when an untoward incident occurred.

The fireworks took place right in an MPK Sports Complex. Suddenly we have the state exco member in charge of local government saying that the fireworks display was not one of components of the show. He even claimed that the event was not formally approved. Has he ever approved any fireworks event before in his last six or seven years in office?

Suddenly, personnel from MPK involved in this event have been suspended and disciplinary and legal actions are likely to follow.

Meanwhile, the MP for Klang said it was irresponsible of the organisers to engage an unlicensed company for the fireworks display. Hindsight is perfect, I guess. Why didn’t he stop it if he knew the company was unlicensed? You know what; this sound like an express bus has 50 unpaid summonses after a major accident.

When an unexpected incident happens, I expect people with positions to take charge. In this case, I expect the state government, the municipal council, the MP and assemblyperson of the area to come forward.

I expect them to jointly take responsibility and assist the police to investigate the causes. I expect them to stand by those assigned to do the fireworks. Please don’t plead innocent as if they are not part of the celebration. I think it would be much more pleasing if they say the fireworks were a state-sponsored event that went awry. It was an unfortunate accident, they shall assist the police to find out the causes and learn from it.

I expect them to protect their people, not throwing them to the wolves. To me this was an unexpected accident, not a malicious or deliberate act. So be a man, own up, and do whatever you can to find out the causes and help your people out.
