Majlis Pembandaran Klang (MPK) said it did not approve New Year’s Eve fireworks display at Pesta Gegar Klang 2016, which injured 16 when it exploded at ground level.

The fireworks show was not listed on the official programme of the event, according to Selangor executive councillor in charge of local government Ean Yong Hian Wah.

The MPK investigation team set up on Jan 1 will reveal their findings in two weeks, he said.

Staff involved in this issue have been asked to take leave between Jan 3 to Jan 31, 2017, pending investigations, he said.

“The state government views this incident seriously. Those found to be negligent or abused their powers will face disciplinary or legal action,” he said in a statement.

He said MPK is cooperating with police in their investigation.

Pyrotechnician told to come forward

Meanwhile, police have instructed four individuals responsible for the fireworks display to come forward to assist investigation.

Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat said the pyrotechnician and his three helpers have until tomorrow afternoon to present themselves before any further action is taken.

Abdul Samah stated that pyrotechnicians must be licensed by police the Minerals and Geoscience Department Malaysia.

“The pyrotechnician involved is believed not to possess the relevant licenses,” he told media at the Selangor police headquarters in Shah Alam, today.

The case is investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957, he said.

“We are aware of who the individuals are, and we will pursue them (if they do not come forward). Just give us some time,” he said.

He also confirmed that 16 were injured and not 14 as earlier reported.

The injured, included four children, received outpatient treatment at Hospital Tuanku Ampuan Rahimah, while MPK has vowed to foot all medical bills.

Some victims have vowed to take legal action against MPK.
