We can understand the frustration of MIC president S Samy Vellu when he said that the 3% equity for Indians has been on the national agenda for too long with nothing being planned and implemented by the government for the community.

If people like Samy Vellu who has a very strong and belligerent character cannot convince the Umno leadership for genuine action over a paltry percentage of 3%, who else can? So Samy's frustration is justified.

This does not mean we should 'close shop'. As citizens, it is our right to march on and constantly ask for what is right and dharmic. MIC is an integral part of the government. Therefore it should not give up but pursue with the matter with political ingenuity.

Firstly, MIC should try to have enough Indians at least at the director level at the various ministries to enable it to have some influence at the national policy implementation stage. This applies particularly to the International Trade and Industry Ministry and Finance Ministry which handle share allocations and reservations.

The problem with our government is that the implementors are largely Malays and it is natural for them to help their kind as much as possible as most of them are also not well-to-do. But the implementors should take note that Indians are holding the highest ratios in terms of all the negatives ie, gangsterism, school dropouts, prisoners, drug addicts, suicide cases, the jobless, etc.

Now with Pak Lah at the helm, we trust that he will look at everything both at the micro and macro level thereby giving full credence to Islam Hadhari besides being a true PM for all Malaysians.
