I refer to newspaper reports on calls to cancel the 'saman ekor' traffic summons issued to some villagers in Perak.

Batu Gajah MP Fong Po Kuan, in calling for the cancellation of these summons issued to the villagers, shows her lack of ability to comprehend the message her recommendation is sending to the villagers particularly, and to traffic offenders generally.

On one level, she is arguing that the summons should be cancelled because the way the summons were issued was wrong. If that is the case, then she should recommend methods that she thinks is proper, or she should request the relevant authority to look into proper ways of issuing summons to traffic offenders.

She should not request for the summons to be cancelled as these summons are issued to traffic offenders regardless of their location.

She further supports her call by saying that she is 'merely highlighting my constituents' unhappiness over the way enforcement is being carried out. Nobody will be happy if they are on the wrong side of the law.

Fong should explain to her constituents that no one is above the law, and that not wearing crash helmets is a traffic offence, rather than trying to score some political brownie points by siding with the obviously law-breaking villagers. The enforcement method might not be suitable, but an offence has been committed nonetheless.

We certainly do not want to encourage the idea that villagers are subjected to less stringent laws. Fong should understand that better than anyone.
