Pro-aspirasi dominates campus elections

The pro-aspirasi (pro-establishment) faction has dominated three more major universities at the recently conducted campus election.

Late last night, it was announced that they defeated rival pro-mahasiswa in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Out of the 35 seats in UKM, 19 were won by pro-aspirasi candidates while pro-mahasiswa, which is seen as being anti-establishment, only managed to win 15. The remaining one seat was won by an independent.

While in UTM, pro-aspirasi managed to win a total of 28 seats while their rivals took 18. Independent candidates managed to steal five out of the total 51 seats contested.

Meanwhile in USM, pro-aspirasi secured a landslide victory, taking 31 seats while the remaining two went to independents.

The result in the Kubang Kerian campus has yet to be finalised.

Earlier, pro-aspirasi managed to win with a slight majority in Universiti Malaya (UM) by winning 21 out of 41 seats. Pro-mahasiswa won 17 seats and independents three seats.

Pro-mahasiswa students were unhappy and staged a demonstration in the university last night when the results were announced.

In Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), pro-aspirasi managed to win 37 seats while pro-mahasiswa only 11.

However, seven out of the 11 winners from the pro-mahasiswa faction have been disqualified for  using Facebook to campaign for the election.

UIA and UMT fall to pro-mahasiswa

Apart from Universiti Islamic Antarabangsa (UIA), pro-mahasiswa only managed to win in Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).

In UMT,  pro-mahasiswa won 11 out of the 12 seats contested while the remaining one seat went to pro-aspirasi.

As for UIA, pro-mahasiswa candidates swept 15 out of 29 seats while pro-aspirasi, independent and international candidates managed to win four seats each.

The remaining two seats - one for the medical faculty and international faulty in Kuantan were vacant as there were no candidates contesting.
