While national shuttler Lee Chong Wei continues to be feted over his recent All-England victory, he is also the butt of naughty jokes which refer to his much-talked-about telephone conversations with Rosmah Mansor, the wife of Premier Najib Razak.

A lunch function to honour Lee's victory was held today, attended by both opposition and government elected representatives in Parliament.

Amongst those in attendance were PAS Kubang Kerian parliamentarian Salahuddin Ayob and DAP Bukit Mertajam representative Chong Eng.

Lee is from the parliamentary constituency of Bukit Mertajam in Penang.

During the event, Youth and Sports Minister and Kemaman parliamentarian Shabery Cheek started the ball rolling with his opening speech where he recounted Chong Wei's frequent conversations with the premier's wife before and after each game.

According to him, the conversation usually went as follows:

Chong Wei: Datin Seri, Saya mahu main . (I want to play).

Rosmah:

Main la puas-puas . (Play till you are satisfied).

And after each win, Ismail said, Lee would call again to tell Rosmah:

Chong Wei: Saya menang! (I won!).

Sabery added that Rosmah is the biggest inspiration and support behind Lee's string of victories.

He also announced that the National Badminton Association (BAM) will be awarded RM2 million as a reward for Lee's win, of which RM20,000 will be given to the shuttler himself.

Najib also took the stage and stole the show when he continued to add further to the ribaldry.

"I only give permission to one person to call my wife at any time of the day. That person is Lee Chong Wei. During their conversation, he would say to my wife, ‘main' . My wife would reply ‘ main la .'"

He chided those who once made much about Lee's lack of a world title despite being ranked world's number one.

Najib said that the All-England win will silence all those skeptics, calling Lee the undisputed badminton champion of the world.

lee chong wei in parliament 170310 01 The premier also took the chance to hawk his 1Malaysia concept by saying that the national shuttler's victory is indicative of the success of 1Malaysia where every race can succeed.

He hoped that Lee would continue to excel and win Malaysia the Thomas Cup and Olympic gold medals, to add to his other accolades.

Coincidentally, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, wife to former premier Mahathir Mohamad, was also an enthusiastic supporter of the national badminton team.
