Police reports lodged against PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim have given his lawyers a needless headache.

Lawyer Sankara Nair described these as "an absolute waste of time as these are based on hearsay in Parliament".

Yesterday, the Umno Youth branches of Selangor, Kelantan and the Federal Territories had lodged police reports over the claim that Anwar had used the names of the Agong and armed forces chief to launch his bid to topple the federal government in September 2008.

MP Zahrain Mohamed Hashim (Independent-Bayan Baru) levelled the charge in the Dewan Rakyat last week.

Sankara ( left ), however, poin sankara nair bukit aman teresea kok isa arrest pc 170908 02 ted out that this was "not an illegal act as Anwar is entitled to consult the Agong if he gets the numbers (to form the federal government)".

Another lawyer and PKR information head Latheefa Koya described Zahrain's comment as "a twisting of facts".

"Anwar was not misusing names but just telling the people what he would do if he succeeded in tabling a motion of no-confidence against the prime minister," she said, when contacted today.

"It sounds a bit ridiculous for Umno Youth to lodge police reports, (but then) they have the tendency to do that over every matter. What is there to probe? There is nothing secret about Anwar's announcement as it was made at a press conference."

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein yesterday urged attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail to look at Anwar's claim from the viewpoints of the federal constitution and of the law.

"If Anwar had really invoked the Agong's name as claimed, then it was truly offensive," he was quoted as saying.

‘We were fooled'

Zahrain said Anwar had informed Pakatan Rakyat MPs that they had the support of the army and the consent of the Agong to take over the federal government.

"The Agong was said to have blessed the appointment of Anwar as the prime minister. We were also 'bribed' with the story that the army was supporting us."

Anwar, who stood up in a vain bid to object, eventually turned and walked out of the House.

Following Pakatan's unprecedented victory in denying BN its traditional two-thirds parliamentary majority in the March 2008 general election, Anwar had made the bold claim that the coalition would secure the cross-overs required to form the federal government by Sept 16.

However, the tables were turned on Pakatan, which instead lost its slim hold over the Perak legislative assembly when three of its representatives crossed over to BN.

Since then, three Pakatan MPs, including Zahrain, have quit PKR and turned Independent, citing differences with the coalition's leadership for various reasons.

A fourth MP, Zulkilfi Noordin, was sacked by PKR for breach of discipline, and has also turned Independent.
