vox populi small thumbnail 'When he gagged the media, it was with ‘good intentions’ and for our own good. When he himself was served his ‘own medicine’, it was with ‘bad intentions’ and to the detriment of the nation.’

Mahathir pot shots bombard detractors

Goat: This man's fear of Anwar Ibrahim has not waned. In every speech he gives, he tries to run his former deputy down as much as possible. It can be seen from his speech that, although Anwar had nothing to do with this function, he still dragged this poor man in. What a shame - this schoolboy mentality.

Swipenter: When he gagged the media, it was with "good intentions" and presumably for our own good. When he himself was served his "own medicine”, it was with “bad intentions" and presumably, to the detriment of the nation.

To him, he can never be wrong and others can never be right about him. This guy has an ego bigger than the sun.

Observer: Like it or not, he did a tremendous job, even though the job was not done perfectly. He is the reason why Malaysiakini and other websites exist and we can participate in them.

There are many racists here calling Dr Mahathir Mohamad a racist. No doubt he has some Indian blood, but so do we. The Chinese are from China. Even the Malays, although they’ve been here for 2,000 years are a mix of other races.

Be open-minded guys. He is not all that bad. He still has a very huge influence on people, that’s why people still listen to him and his blog are read by millions.

Ferdtan: Mahathir sees Anwar - his nemesis - everywhere. He can never get enough of criticising him, attacking him whenever possible, even when the occasion is not about Anwar. He was totally out of topic. It is a kind of fatal attraction.

I guess that is what keeps him alive - his longevity formula. The more success that Anwar achieves, the more riled up Mahathir will be.

Cala:

To be fair to Mahathir, my conclusion about him is that he is a shallow-thinking person. Each time he is given a problem to solve, only expediency counts.

Very often, he wants a quick solution to a given problem and the concept of economics and logic never crosses his mind (the proposed Johor-Singapore twisted bridge is a case in point, and the often-used direct negotiated tender is another).

Given this trait which has come to dominate him in his thinking, he is a man incapable of planning long-range. In many decisions that he made, it did not bother him whether there were values created. Over time, Mahathir has come to represent a brand name in the negative sense - failure.

Faz: True to form, Mahathir is exhibiting what he has been doing all these years. He is a Malay nationalist who is moulded by the events and circumstances of his growing years. His opinions are ‘right’ and he dared to debunk any conventions. He is so focussed to achieve his goal of putting Malays on higher pedestal by altering and crippling all obstacles to stay in power to carry out his visions.

He is a doctor who will attend to a patient and dispense the needed medication without consulting the patient because "I am the doctor and I know what is wrong with him and he knows nut about his sickness".

Mahathir has done wonders in certain areas during his time but the damages done in some important areas are too significant to ignore.

Khalid blasts Khir, the 'illegal sand miner'

Multi Racial: MB Khalid Ibrahim, don't waste your time on these irresponsible politicians - they "raped" the state wealth when they were in power. Just look at Mohd Khir Toyo’s mansion. Tell me, how can an ex-menteri besar afford such luxury? Where does his wealth come from? It looks like the whole country knows except the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Khalid, we know your hands are tied. Unlike others, you are rich before you become MB. Others get into politics to become rich. I like what you, Lim Guan Eng and Nik Aziz Nik Mat did to the states under your respective governments. Although none of you have experience in governing a state, it does not take much to make your work visible to us.

You just need to be honest and clean, and you are already miles ahead of the rest. Remember, if there are those who are corrupted even in your own party, don't be afraid to expose them. We want corrupted politicians out, regardless which parties they are from.

Ghkok: The people of Selangor are convinced that they have made the right choice when they voted BN out in March 2008. Khalid has presented the facts. Mohd Khir Toyo, and Chua Soi Lek do not have any solid arguments about sand-mining.

Ex-Civil Servant: I like the fact that Pakatan Rakyat always counters BN accusations with facts and figures. BN accusations rely on make-up stories or lies when there are no figures or evidence to support them.

Bond repayment: Crucial PKA decision tomorrow

Limml: I think it’s better let Kong Cho Ha invoke Section 3(4) of the Port Authorities Act 1963 to override the board's decision in the event the board decides to withhold payment. I wonder whether the PM Najib Abdul Razak has consulted Perkasa or Perjasa or Per-whatever-sa on this.

Tony: If Kong consented to make payment, would he be personally responsible for his action should KDSB lose its case and later be unable/unwilling to repay the Port Klang Authority the proceeds?

Gov't orders port authority to pay PKFZ bondholders

Loyal Malaysian: I see the order as one by the Umnoputras to gratify their cronies. It is not their money in the first instance, it is the rakyat's money. But so many years in power have caused them to forget that they are just trustees of the rakyat's money.
