Islamic state: PAS playing good cop-bad cop?

vox populi small thumbnail 'Kudos to PAS who can con the non-Muslims into a sense of security while making Umno do their work by default. Either way PAS wins.'

PAS: Once bitten, twice shy

Justicekini: Tok Guru, I think there was wisdom in Dr Mahathir Mohamad threatening Kelantan against implementing hudud. Firstly, even Muslims do not understand hudud laws due to Malaysia being a secular nation.

The older generations take Islamic teachings quite seriously, but the younger generations are not aware of the principles of lslamic laws, unlike Kelantan. In the other states, despite their Islamic departments, knowledge of hudud is very shallow. Non-Muslims get the feeling it's only about cutting hands and legs, and all the assumptions that are negative about Islam.

Most Chinese respected you as well as Islam, but they fear that (true) Islam will be practised as they may have to give up drinking, gambling and other things prohibited in Islam.

The best way is to win over the non-Muslims first. Educate them. Even if they do not become Muslim, at least they will respect our religion. One wise move is to allow Chinese Muslims to have their own mosque, like Indian Muslims.

Munafiq: Sadly, Nik Aziz Nik Mat will not be at the helm of PAS forever. The radicals are waiting in the wings. We know of PAS' secret agenda. They're always playing the good cop-bad cop scenario.

Ultimately, it's about achieving PAS' Islamic state goals. PAS is cunningly forcing Umno to play the religious hand and outdoing PAS for the support of the religious. Kudos to PAS who can con the non-Muslims into a sense of security while making Umno do their work by default. Either way PAS wins.

Ultimately it will between PAS and non-believers in Talibanised Malaysia. It's deception at its best by not revealing one's true intent, but like a malignant cancer, takes over the unsuspecting subject in the course of time.

Paul Warren: Tok Guru Nik Aziz, if you would excuse me for my insolence, what exactly may I ask is wrong with secular law? Please have Pakistan in your mind when you answer me, as Pakistan has Islamic law.

Gen2indian: Until recently, misled by the mainstream media, I believed that if PAS came to national power, we would all be forcefully converted or be dictated to by hudud laws.

Thanks to the alternative media, I now know that it is the Umno/BN people who have misused Islam to mislead people and deliberately create racial mistrust to stay in power and continue plundering the country.

If PAS, via Pakatan Rakyat, does come to national power in the 13 th general elections, I will whole-heartedly support them as hundreds of my friends do. At least PAS will not rob what rightfully belongs to the people and will put an end to BN's massive corruption and mismanagement.

Anonymous: Be careful what we wish for. PAS will say nice thing to win votes. They only will show their real self after coming in power. PAS cannot be trusted. No countries with hudud law has been successful, especially for non-Muslims.

Wong Jiang Fung: I beg to differ, Guru. Laws ought to evolve as times change. What was legally acceptable in the past may not be acceptable at present due to updated human values. Women convicted of adultery being stoned to death may be acceptable in the past, but it's now considered a barbaric act.

The problem with hudud laws is that it seldom evolves and still clings to the past values. It is this reason that the non-Muslim can never accept hudud.

Pemerhati: Nik Aziz "also praised the openness within PAS' partner in the Pakatan Rakyat coalition DAP, to learning more about Islam."

It would be good if PAS, DAP and others could also widen their horizons beyond religion and read some well-known books such as Bertrand Russel's ‘Why I am not a Christian', Richard Dawkins's ‘The God Delusion' and ‘God is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything' by Christopher Hitchens.

Perhaps PAS could also learn something from the US, which is one of the most advanced and successful countries in the world, where the vast majority of the people are Christians. In the US religion is kept completely out of the government because the government wants to treat all its citizens fairly and equally.

If they were to incorporate elements of, say Christianity, into their administration, it would be very unfair to the non-Christian citizens as they would feel that Christian values were being imposed on them.

Muslim gay man attacked for honesty

Concerned Citizen1e05: Though there are laws against gay people as such, generally the authorities close one eye unless it is flaunted or it gets too out of hand. Look at Beach Club, sex workers are known to ply their trade there and in so many other places. However, as long as it does not cause harm to society in general or it's just between two people, the authorities generally do not go after them.

Only when it is in public or generally may cause harm to the society or openly flouting the law will the authorities take action. In this regard, however much I want to respect Azwan Ismail's open confession, I think he was stupid for doing it. He was inviting trouble to himself.

Myop101: Why should Azwan be threatened just because he chooses to be who he is? Even if one disagrees with Azwan, one should talk with him and at the end of the day, agree to disagree.

After all, he is still somebody's son, brother and cousin. Who are we to pronounce death or harm or punishment as though we are sinless before God?

Imran: I think the Malaysian authorities have been fairly moderate in that they have been taking the ‘live and let live' attitude (or taking the close-one-eye approach) with regard to gay presence.

I think the gay community should appreciate this and not try to publicise issues unnecessarily, because that will only make the authorities harden their stand. So please, just go on with your lives, but don't stir up unnecessary attention, because you know that no religion condones it.

Heidegger and Derrida: Azwan, I have say this: you put yourself up on Youtube and advertised to the world what you are, and now you're trying to play coy? What did you expect? An all-expenses paid trip to Mecca? You had made your call. Now face the music. You reap what you sow.

EL: The only reason people use to say homosexuality is wrong is religious reason. There is no conclusive scientific nor historical proof that homosexuality is evil and wrong. The fact that homosexual practices has been in existence since humans existed on earth indicates it's part of humanity.

Besides Sodom and Gomorrah, so far, I have not come across any other civilisations that were destroyed by God because of homosexuality. And people who committed great atrocities like Hitler, and corrupt politicians in our country, are all straight.

Najib wants only 'winnable candidates' for S'wak

KSN: That is going to be a tall order for the PM Najib Razak. Where in Umno-BN is he going to find the credible, winnable candidates with integrity, capability, etc, that the people are looking for?

The PM should reflect for a moment how many, if any, in his cabinet will pass that test, leave alone the deputies and other MPs? Assuming he is saying what he said sincerely, is Umno going to allow him to do that?
