The Election Commission (EC) is to meet on Friday to determine the date for the Merlimau state by-election in Melaka, EC secretary Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria said today.

He said in a statement the EC had been officially notified by the speaker of the Melaka state legislative assembly that the seat fell vacant on Jan 20 following the death of the assemblyperson Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasan of the BN.

Kamaruddin said EC chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof would announce the nomination and polling dates for the by-election after the meeting.
