Wanita PKR wants Premier Najib Abdul Razak to rein in his spouse Rosmah Mansor from overstepping the bounds of her station and making statements on behalf of the nation.

NONE “We have told the PM before, he should control his wife. She has overstepped her bounds in her role as the spouse of the premier,” said the movement’s chief, Zuraida Kamaruddin ( right ), during a press conference in Parliament today.

Zuraida, who is also Ampang parliamentarian, was referring to a recent statement about the Japanese earthquake and tsunami disaster attributed to the PM’s wife as proof that Rosmah is not a credit to Malaysia’s diplomatic relations.

A Selangor TV video clip posted on CNN’s iReport website, came with a story alleging that Rosmah has accused the Japanese government of negligence and failing to care for the environment as the cause of the disaster.

The report, later picked up by a news portal, also stated that the PM’s spouse has been the object of ridicule on Twitter and Facebook .

However, Malaysiakini has been unable to find in the video posted any audible audio or footage containing disparaging remarks made by Rosmah about the Japanese government and their alleged ‘negligence’ in the disaster.

“The incident shows that she as the prime minister’s wife is not qualified to be the voice of Malaysian women, what more to call herself the First Lady of Malaysia,” said Zuraida.

“I was shocked by the statement issued by the PM's wife, it is as if she is an MP. In issues like this usually the PM’s wife is not supposed to play a part,” he said.

The Sungai Petani MP said that the current PM’s wife should follow the sterling examples of her predecessors Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali and Jeanne Abdullah.

“He (Najib) has a cabinet, a parliament, let them do their job. Every time she open her mouth, the norm is it will mean trouble for the government.

“She should sit quietly and perform her duties as a wife, not try to be a ruler,” Johari concluded.
