Student group Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia today launched its Malaysia Bangkit movement in the run-up to a major rally slated for next month, dubbed to be similar to the recent Bersih 2.0 and Himpunan Hijau rallies.

Malaysia Bangkit 2 The movement, said Malaysia Bangkit president Mohd Syahid Mohd Zaini, intends to bring the country's youths together to push for a nine-point demand for the betterment of the country's future which they will inherit.

The nine points are:

  • Curb corruption
  • Clean elections
  • Free press
  • Free healthcare
  • Free education
  • Free transportation
  • A high-income society
  • A green country
  • Uphold the constitution
"These nine core points are our demands to the government if it is truly committed in recognising the ideas of the young generation," he said after staging a mini-launching of the April 14 rally in Bukit Bintang this evening.

Some 20 youth activists held up banners along the busy street of the shopping district in the heart of Kuala Lumpur to make known their grouses as curious bystanders look on.

While the police approached them for more details of the event, no action was taken against the protesters as about 10 officers, uniformed and plainclothes watched on.

In the run-up to the April 14 rally - which they target to gather 100,000 youths - several roadshows will be held nationwide on top of a planned concert on April 7.

"We plan to do it at a stadium. For now, we're considering Stadium Melawati in Shah Alam," he explained.

Malaysia Bangkit chairperson Mohd Syahid Mohd Zaini Asked if the students were chewing off more than they could handle with such diverse demands, Mohd Syahid ( right ) disagreed.

"It is towards in that general direction (in line with the demands of other major activist movements), but our focus is on youth."

At the rally, he said the students will take a symbolic pledge which will later be submitted to both the government and opposition.

"How both sides respond to our pledge will be a yardstick whether Malaysia needs a new government or otherwise come the general election," he warned.
