If only the cops were half as good as PAS' Unit Amal

YOURSAY ‘They impressed me with their good manners, sincerity, humbleness, and most importantly, always with a smiling face.'

'Unit Amal pulled back when protesters turned defiant'

your say Bobby Cheng: Thank you, PAS Unit Amal for your voluntary work. The rakyat came in peace not war. I wonder why duduk bantah is being turned into clashes.

Even in the worst-case scenario, Dataran Merdeka being breached by some defiant members of the public, so what? What's going to happen? The Najib Razak administration will lose power?

Come on, let them stay there for a few hours, sun and rain will wash them away. Everyone needs to get back to work the next day anyway. What's this about Bersih 3.0 allegedly plotting to bring down Najib?

Why are they wasting taxpayers' money shooting tear gas, water cannon, dragging the case on till today? Malaysia politics is for the insane. Utterly madness.

ABBN: I was there at Bersih 3.0 and also at numerous Pakatan Rakyat occasions and have personally witnessed the performance of the Unit Amal.

No doubt they are merely volunteers and deemed amateurish, yet they are very discipline and obedient and acted very professional and committed to their task.

They impressed me with their good manners, friendliness, sincerity, humbleness, and most importantly, very helpful and always with a smiling face.

Many non-Malays love to chit-chat with them whenever possible. Seeing them around with you, you feel secure instantly.

How I wish the Royal Malaysian Police's (PDRM) standard could be brought up to even only half of the Unit Amal, Malaysia would be a much safer place to live in.

Unit Amal chief Johari Osman and all members of his team, please keep up the good work - all of you do truly deserve the people's respect.

Jimmy Ng: I was there, too, and can also vouch for the good work done by the Unit Amal corps members who were present at Bersih 3.0.

The presence and actions of ‘agents provocateurs' was the most likely cause of the unprovoked and brutal violence from the PRDM.

The Time Is Now, Get Ready: It's not the police are turning nasty, it's the opposition that is creating, on a daily basis, issues of confrontation. Either with the police, other political parties or just creating lies and fabricating issues to always put the police or government in a bad light.

This is what they call a political agenda, and as for the real issues facing the rakyat, they do not bother to do anything.

No issues of the poor being helped, nor even any issues helping the rakyat has been carried out, unlike the BN which does this almost daily.

When BN carries out this, the opposition will turn it into a circus and condemn it as bribing the rakyat and stuff like that.

Blind Freddo: Are Malaysians on some sort of guilt trip? Bersih 3.0 was probably the proudest moment in the history of Malaysia when Malaysians finally took control of their own destiny, instead of being cowed by a government and a society which uses fear at every chance to repress the rakyat.

Sure, there were some foul-ups but they were minor and irrelevant. Did you in your naivety expect everyone to act like perfect angels?

Yet you seem to be hell-bent on destroying the gains you have made. By still thinking that your fantasy Asian values mean something, you want to tear down all that is good about Bersih.

Once again, you are your own worst enemies... and your real enemies must be gloating.

Anonymous_3f8e: Unit Amal is a credit to our youth and to the PAS leadership. It is obvious to all that their task is not only to ensure safety of the demonstrators but equally important is to maintain crowd discipline. By right, the PDRM should be most appreciative for this assistance.

The unkindest cut would be to project Unit Amal as a "militant grouping". Johari Osman, keep up your spirits, you are contributing to nation building in a very noble fashion. Ribuan terima kasih.

Dont Just Talk: We must give credit when credit is due and Johari Osman and his Unit Amal had done a very good job during the April 28 Bersih 3.0 peaceful sit-in at Dataran Merdeka.

They were disciplined and heroic by standing as the first line of defence against the police brutality. The few hundred thousands fo peaceful Malaysians in yellow, green and red were not a threat until orders were given by Bersih leaders to disperse after 3pm.

What happened then is pretty obvious to anyone with common sense, the agents provocateurs planted amongst the crowd took advantage of the situation to create trouble, first by breaching the police barrier then marching to Dataran Merdeka..

What harm can it cause had PDRM just allowed them to march through peacefully, instead of firing tear gas and water cannons?

PDRM could have capitalised on the incident by showing the humane side of the police force. Sadly, they screwed up for a second time around, by their brutal and thuggish behaviour even late into the night.

Ong Guan Sin: The Unit Amal has done great for Malaysia. I first witnessed them during the first Bersih in 2007, when the members actually picked up trash on the road left behind after the protesters had dispersed.

And they made sure nobody was left behind their human chain in the face of the police. In all the rallies/protests, Unit Amal is the right team to help maintain peace, whereas Polis Raja Di-Malaysia does the opposite.

Shame on PRDM! Bravo Unit Amal!
