Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has proposed to the cabinet to continue the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) programme.

Speaking to reporters at Taman Melawati, Selangor he said that this is merely his own proposal and that it is up to the prime minister whether to take it up.

"If the PM is generous and there are extra funds, then he can make a decision. I don't have the right (to decide)," he said.

However, he said that BR1M has been one of the most effective BN programmes and that he is not alone in hoping for a second round.

"There has also been other voices in cabinet, among parlimentarians, senators and local leaders who have given feedback.

"(They say) such a move is good in dealing with cost of living issues," he said.

He added that he is "confident" that the PM too knows this as the latter is in touch with the grassroots through his various programmes.

"It's up to the PM," he said.

The government had spent more than RM2 billion to provide RM500 per household in the first round of BR1M, as a means of income assistance for lower income households.
