Hulu Langat MP: I never said Lynas plant is safe
Fed-up with cartoons, badges and T-shirts portraying him as being ‘pro-Lynas’, PAS’ Hulu Langat MP Che Rosli Che Mat has lashed out at those who have taken his views out of context.
Fed-up with cartoons, badges and T-shirts portraying him as being ‘pro-Lynas’, PAS’ Hulu Langat MP Che Rosli Che Mat has lashed out at those who have taken his views out of context.
"I only said that, as a nuclear scientist, I find that the radiation level is low,” he said, referring to his
remarks
in the Dewan Rakyat last week.
“I never said that the Lynas plant is safe. There are other considerations such as the chemical process that needs to be looked at.”
As for those using his image in pro-Lynas campaign material, Che Rosli pointed out that they “do not have my permission (to do so)”.
“If they continue, I may sue," he told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.
PAS Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, who was also present, said tactics such as using Che Rosli's comments out of context were a "desperate" attempt by BN to defend the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (Lamp) in Gebeng, Kuantan..
Khalid showed reporters a Twitter picture of a poster that showed a likeness of Che Rosli, with the slogan "We Support Lynas".
Tweeted by BN supporter to MP from PAS
The picture he said, was tweeted by a known BN supporter to another PAS parliamentarian, Dzulkefly Ahmad.
Che Rosli's statement in Parliament and his interview with TV3 in August last year made him the main focus of the government’s, BN’s and Lynas' campaign to assure the public that Lamp is safe, despite concerns raised by the opposition, environmental activists and citizens’ action groups.
In his earlier statements, the Hulu Langat MP said that his expert opinion of the plant was that it emits little radiation, which does not constitute a danger.
The pro-Lynas groups and campaigners have taken his statement as an open endorsement of Lamp.
Che Rosli and PAS have been running damage control these last few months to refute the pro-Lynas groups, which they said were using the statements "out of context".
On its part, the BN has openly attacked Pakatan Rakyat and PAS, accusing them of not listening to their own experts on the issue.
