The campaign period has just entered its third day today but punters have started to bet on the election results on May 5, with some placing RM100 to RM200 in bets in a bid to strike the jackpot.

NONE Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) publicity and information chief Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew ( left ) said based on the feedback received from its grassroots supporters in Miri city, the election betting started right after the nomination process on Saturday.

"It is very worrying as the betting can influence the election results and ultimately, those who suffer for the next five years will be the people at large," he said at a news conference in Miri today.

"We advise those who may want to bet on the election results to stay away from it and do not waste your future by gambling," he said.

Ting, who is the BN candidate for the Miri parliamentary seat, said the party had no plans to lodge a police report since the police had assured that betting during the 13th general election was being monitored.

"Furthermore, it is hard to come up with solid evidence as some of them are operating discreetly," he said.

Earlier, Miri deputy police chief, Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said so far, no police report on election betting on the Miri and Sibuti parliamentary seats had been received, but police were monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, Ting rubbished the claim by DAP that the opposition party would make a clean sweep of five parliamentary seats in northern Sarawak which were traditionally BN strongholds.

"Anybody can say anything they want but in the end, the voters will decide the outcome by next week (May 5). Let's wait and see," he said.

The five parliamentary seats in northern Sarawak are Sibuti, Miri, Baram, Limbang and Lawas.
