The newly-appointed Selangor government executive council members are not required to declare their assets obtained before their appointment into the state cabinet due to security reasons, Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said yesterday.

According to Sin Chew Daily , they only need to declare the changes in their assets during their tenure.

He explained that the information about the assets they had before their appointment will be kept by the state government for future reference, but it will not be made public.

“I compromised on this measure because some exco members pointed out that the personal security of themselves and their families might be threatened if all their assets are made public,” he was quoted as saying during an integrity seminar in Shah Alam yesterday.

This ruling has been in place since the initiative to improve transparency and integrity of the state government was first introduced in 2009.

The declaration only involved changes in their properties and liabilities since they were sworn in.

On May 30, Khalid announced that the assets of all state cabinet members will be declared before the state legislative assembly sits for the first time on June 28.

However, this has yet to be done although the sitting had ended yesterday.
