MCA president Chua Soi Lek opined that his blessing was not important for deputy president Liow Tiong Lai to take the top post in party elections to be held at the end of this year.

“I think my blessing is not important, as the candidates who wish to contest have their own strength and charisma,” he told a press conference when asked to respond to Liow’s announcement to vie for the party top post.

Liow, being a deputy president and central delegate, is entitled and  qualified to contest the top post, he said after chairing the four-hour presidential council meeting.

Liow had reportedly announced his candidacy three days ago during interview with Chinese dailies, saying he felt a calling to lead the party following Chua’s announcement not to defend his post.

“At this moment, I am not thinking of whether to defend (the president’s post), I just want to make sure the party elections will go on smoothly and there is stability within the party,” he said, adding he wants to see the party continue to move on following its worst electoral defeat.

Chua said he want the party to adopt “stability above all”, the party slogan used in the last general election, and implement it in the party election.

To a question that Liow has claimed that ‘no-government posts’ was a wrong decision made by the party, Chua rebutted that the party had just adopted this policy for two months, so he could not tell for now.

“(When party leaders) talk about this frequently, it would strike people that MCA can’t stand two months without any government positions,” he said.

“Any decision made in politics can’t remain static, and this is the virtue of politics,” the former health minister claimed.
