The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has urged teachers to act professionally in dealing with pupils of a primary school whose parents were involved in disclosing the use of a shower room as a canteen.

"The teachers dealing with the matter should act professionally. If they act professionally, then none of this would happen," NUTP general secretary Lok Yim Pheng said when contacted by Malaysiakini today.

NONE Lok was responding to Guneswari Kelly who said her daughter was being berated by teachers after she highlighted the canteen issue at SK Seri Pristana in Sungai Buloh.

Guneswari on July 23 uploaded photographs of the make-shift canteen in a shower room, claiming that non-Muslim students were being made to eat there during the month of Ramadan.

However, the school said the shower room had been used as a temporary canteen since March, with pupils of all races eating there.

The canteen, which was said to be under renovation, has since been reopened, after the Education Ministry intervened in the matter.

Since the incident was highlighted, both the Guneswari and the school's headmaster Mohamad Nasir Mohd Nor have received death and kidnap threats .
