PAS Youth wants the authorities to begin a thorough probe into allegations of misconduct made against attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail and, should there be sufficient evidence, a tribunal to be set up on the matter.

PAS Legal and Human Rights Department deputy chairperson II Ahmad Zamri Asa'ad Khuzaimi made the call said this following Malaysiakini's report on a high-level meeting among former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, senior lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, and several former top officers on Gani's alleged misconduct.

NONE"With the revelation about the meeting, it seems the AG is facing a 'trial by media' following the allegations thrown at him. PAS and other opposition parties had in the past raised Gani's (right) questionable action and behaviour in his job as the AG," Ahmad Zamri said.

"Pakatan Rakyat leaders have in the past been victims of `selective prosecution' by Gani. We have seen extremist groups such as Perkasa, which is close to Umno/BN, escaping the strong arms of the law despite raising sensitive racial and religious issues."

Ahmad Zamri, who is a lawyer by profession, said the power given to the AG under Article 145(3) of the federal constitution to initiate criminal charges have been fully utilised by Gani for certain interests.

He added that considering the people who attended the meeting with Mahathir, it appeared that the revelation to the media was to apply pressure on Gani and his boss Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

"Whatever, the political ploy is by Mahathir. PAS is of the view that the government should open a thorough investigation into the activities of Gani by referring back to the various police and the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission reports lodged against him, and other allegations that have been made in the past.

"The country cannot have the integrity of its top legal officer in question. All investigations should be made to verify the many allegations against Gani. If they are valid, a tribunal should be formed under Article 145 (6) and Article 125 of the federal constitution," Ahmad Zamri added.
