It's highly likely PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim will be not be able to contest the Kajang by-election next week, should the prosecution's appeal on his Sodomy II acquittal succeed, party leaders say.

The Court of Appeal is hearing the case today and tomorrow.

Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin ( right ) said the last-minute appeal hearing was a political move by the BN government to end Anwar's political life.

"Once the Court of Appeal completes its hearing on Friday, the judgment may be delivered on the following Monday afternoon, right after the Parliament session in the morning.

"Should Anwar be convicted, there will be no time for his lawyers to apply for stay of execution at the Federal Court as it would be after office hours, and he will be kept in jail," Sim told a press conference today.

With this, Sim explained, Anwar would not be able to file his be nomination papers as the Pakatan candidate for Kajang by-election the next day, on March 11.

"This is a political move by BN to disrupt our Kajang Move... the people have to be aware of this," he warned.

‘Why the delay by the court?’

Yesterday, Anwar failed in his eleventh hour application for a stay of proceedings of the prosecution's appeal on his Sodomy II acquittal, resulting in the hearing beginning this morning.

Sim pointed out that usually, the Court of Appeal would only take six months to a year to hear an appeal application, but in Anwar's case, it had been delayed since 2012.

He questioned why the court delayed the hearing for almost two years and then started the proceedings at this juncture, when the Kajang by-election had been called.

“Why is the court appearing to be so efficient within these two weeks, right after we launched the Kajang Move? Is there anybody behind all these scenes?”

Asked if a substitute was being prepared to replace Anwar, should he not be able to contest the by-election, Sim said the party “is prepared for the worst” but there has been no discussion on the shortlisting of the candidates.

‘Chew is a forgetful person’

Meanwhile Teja assemblyperson Chang Lih Kang of PKR chided  MCA vice-president Chew Mei Fun, who was spotted on the same stage with a Perkasa leader in Kajang last week, and called her a forgetful person.

“She is only one who has forgotten about the event, so we want to remind her about it today,” Chang ( left ) said.

Accusing Umno of sponsoring Perkasa and allowing it to advocate extremism, he went on to challenge Chew to disassociate herself from the country's largest ruling party within the BN.

Chang said Chew should not claim to be a credible and principled leader if she failed to quit being a BN leader.

Pro-Pakatan Rakyat bloggers have revealed that Chew and Negri Sembilan Perkasa chief Ruslan Kassim spoke on the same stage during a national economic briefing session organised by Umno at Teratak Pekembar, Kampung Batu 10 in Cheras, on Feb 28.

Chew claimed she did not remember the occasion and maintained that she has always opposed the extreme actions and remarks of Perkasa.
