The police arrested Penang Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) chairperson Phee Boon Poh this evening.

The 62-year-old state exco member was detained when he went to the Northeast district police headquarters to give his statement at around 4.30pm.

Phee, who is also Sungai Puyu assemblyperson, was accompanied by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer.

The exco member ( right ) also posted about his arrest on Facebook.

His arrest followed the detention of 154 PPS members after they marched at the Merdeka Parade this morning.

Police arrested the group - which provides voluntary and community service to the public - after deeming it illegal as it is not registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

Following this, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar warned those behind PPS to turn themselves in or the police will raid their homes.

Meanwhile, Northeast district police chief Asst Comm Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said a total of 156 PPS members have been arrested under Section 43 of the Societies Act.

He also denied that the chief minister has been arrested.

Bernama adds that a statement was taken from Lim, as well as from Rayer.

Women, elderly men, to be released

At 8.30pm, police announced that seven female PPS members and males aged about 60 would be released tonight on police bail.

Many family members were waiting outside the police HQ for their relatives' release.

However, Phee will spend the night in the detention.

When asked, the OCPD Mior said "he is a special case".

Meanwhile, a female PPS member was sent to hospital by ambulance around 7.45pm.

According to state exco Lim Hock Seng, she was from Seri Delima patrol unit.

There was also a husband and team‎ also arrested, who hail from Lebuh Presgrave.
