IGP has bigger tasks to do than going after Alvin

YOURSAY ‘Is Alvin really worth all that trouble? How big is he a criminal?’

After pig snout post, sex blogger takes on IGP

Ferdtan: This is getting ridiculous. A fugitive sex blogger Alvin Tan gets special attention from the police chief?

Inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar appeared to have so much time on his hands - as if he has no other important tasks to do, like fighting rampant crimes - and vowed that the police would leave no stone unturned in locating Tan.

Did he issue a similar strong statement on the Malaysian volunteers fighting together with Islamic State (Isis) in Syria? Did he investigate, if sedition are to be equally applied when Nik Abdul son of Nik Aziz Nik Mat praised the death of former Kedah PAS Youth information chief Lotfi Ariffin who was killed in action a “sacrifice”?

Wasn’t that a clear support of terrorism that PM Najib Razak had declared against in the United Nations and was praised by US President Obama?

As for Alvin Tan he may be unfairly harassed by the police and we sympathise him for that. But it cannot go beyond that as he has tarnished his image as a ‘sex exhibitionist’. He is an antithesis of a real hero. He is certainly not my hero.

The real ones are the young student activists fighting meaningful battle for human rights and against the dictatorial BN regime. These young men deserve all our support.

They are student activists - Adam Adli, Muhammad Safwan Anang (and many more) - who had been sentenced to jail for sedition for 12 months and 19 months respectively.

And do you know why Umno (and the police) like to whack Alvin Tan? We know the real political game these racist ruling government politicians are playing; they are painting him as representative of his race.

Did you see MCA supporting him? They know the psychological game, painting the minority Malaysians in the country with the same brush with an obnoxious young man who played no part in our nation’s politics.

Even the busy Sports and Youth Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has time to jump in to criticise Tan.

CQ Muar: Khairy Jamaluddin, you must be imagining you're the only brilliant guy in this country for branding Alvin Tan a "coward", and that he should return to Malaysia to repeat those nasty things he said.

If Alvin were to heed your challenge by returning (having jumped bail and with the kind of lopsided justice we have here), then Alvin is not only a "coward" but a darn idiot and a nincompoop.

By the way, Khairy, are you also not a coward for not responding to former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad's recent spate of criticisms and nasty insults about Umno leadership?

Tholu: Khairy, this country is no place for people who are brave enough to say that the government is wrong, that its actions are wrong, that its policies are wrong, that its inaction against people who instigate racial and religious animosity among the people is wrong, that its selective persecution against its dissidents and political rivals is wrong and its trampling of the democratic system of the country is wrong.

But don't despair KJ, you can still find some people who are brave and say what they like without the fear of the law coming down hard on them.

Go find out how brave people such as Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Universiti Pertahanan Malaysia lecturer Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, Perkasa leader Ibrahim Ali, Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii, former Court of Appeal Judge Mohd Noor Abdullah and former Chief Justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad are.

Telestai!: Alvin Tan isn't wrong in his assessment of the IGP and the Malaysian police in general although I do not condone his latest aggressive act.

If only they were passionate about fighting crime and protecting the rights of the rakyat, would we have ended in the current state of affairs?

Having said that, the police aren’t alone in the systematic assault on key public institutions. The media, the judiciary, the royalty, education, banking and anti-corruption agencies have all suffered.

Keturunan Malaysia: I’m not condoning Alvin Tan's action. In fact, I’m strictly against such behaviour. Like his ex-girlfriend said, Tan should deal with the issue up-front and not run away whenever he faces a problem.

Keriso: I think the IGP should take such affront in stride and show us the rest of Malaysia how he can go on with his more important tasks at hand, which is to arrest those "Latin Americans" who has completely dismantled our ATM security so wantonly (who let in these criminals?) and also reduce our crime rates.

As taxpaying citizens who pay for his salary and his colleagues, I object to him wasting his time with all these petty issues.

We don't need an IGP who get worked up over people photoshopping him as I am sure a lot of people are already making such comments also in the coffeeshop, but what we want him to do is to do what he is paid to do, that is to reduce our crime rates and make our country safer.

If he cannot handle this pressure of some pipsqueak making fun of him from United States, then, resign and let someone who has the stiffness of character to deal with the more urgent issues at hand.

Commentable: Reading the many comments posted in Malaysiakini about the country's top cop has given me something to chew on. Remember the movie about the mighty King Kong?

In trying to swat a tiny mosquito that's causing some minute irritation, the big ape causes huge collateral damage to everyone and everything around him, not caring one bit for the destruction and expense caused.

He did it just for the sake of showing how big and mighty he is. Fast forward to the present day, is Alvin Tan really worth all that trouble? How big is he a criminal?
