Former Malaysian embassy employee Muhammad Rizalman Ismail, who was sent to New Zealand recently to face sexual assault charges, has been granted bail today.

According to stuff.co.nz, his lawyer Donald Stevens QC applied for bail for his client following questions about how he left last time from Wellington District Court judge Arthur Tompkins.

The news portal added that Crown solicitor Grant Burston had said that the application for bail was opposed.

Muhammad Rizalman, 38, has been charged with assault with intent to commit sexual violation and remained in a building without consent.

He was arrested on May 10 following the alleged attack in the victim's home in the Wellington suburb of Brooklyn.

He left New Zealand without facing trial after Malaysia invoked diplomatic immunity on the grounds that the New Zealand government had agreed to this.

He returned to New Zealand after extradition proceeding were filed and was escorted back by New Zealand police.
