The worst floods to hit peninsular Malaysia in history is a sign from God that the hudud agenda must go on, said PAS’ Pasir Mas MP Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz.

The PAS-led Kelantan government has vowed to press on with Dec 29 special legislative sitting to pass an amendment so hudud can be implemented in the state.

"The floods remind Muslims to return to Allah and to avoid His wrath. It justifies the Kelantan government’s steadfastness in implementing the hudud,” he said in Facebook posting.

Most who commented on the posting panned him, saying that he should not abuse religion and that Islam prioritises life and safety.

"The floods happen because the PAS government has been chopping down the rainforest, never cared about drainage systems and rubbish collection. This is not new. It happens every year.

"Hudud, you head! Solve this first. Wearing a skull cap and grinning doesn’t give you immunity from verbal abuse if you say stupid things,” user Hussain Muhammad S said.

Although the east coast state is prone to flooding during the monsoon season, Kelantan authorities say this is the worst it has faced in at least a decade.

More than 30,000 have been displaced in the state as at this morning, with Kelantan being the worst-hit among the five states enduring floods in peninsular Malaysia.

Prayer is key

At least 90,000 have had evacuate and four died nationwide due to the floods, prompting demands for a state of emergency to be called to assist in relief work.

PAS has also been told by its partners in Pakatan Rakyat to shelve its fractious hudud plans and to focus on disaster relief.

The federal government approved RM50 million immediate flood aid to affected states, while Selangor has agreed to help Kelantan.

For Nik Abduh, who is also the son of long-serving former Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Aziz Nik Mat, the best way to face the mammoth disaster is prayer.

“The lock to the floods belongs to the rains, and the key is in prayer. Even if a million people come to help, we must never lose that key.”
