The PAS-led Kelantan government should focus its efforts in addressing worsening floods in the state instead of pushing ahead with its emergency legislative assembly sitting to enable hudud in Kelantan, says DAP Youth.

Youth chief Teo Kok Seong’s strongly-worded statement comes after DAP MP Gobind Singh Deo proposed  kicking PAS out of Pakatan Rakyat if it insists on the hudud.

“As natural disaster hits Kelantan and the east coast states, (Kelantan Deputy Minister Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah) and his administration should calm down and focus all time, effort and resources to assist flood victims.

“He should not be saying so much about something which clearly deviates from the Pakatan common consensus,” he said in a statement.

Teo said Mohd Amar’s remark in Malaysiakini ’s interview that implementing hudud is more important than wresting Putrajaya implies that PAS is willing to cut ties with Pakatan.

“It seems like he lost all rational consideration and succumbed to those who try to sabotage PAS’ joint effort with PKR and DAP to unseat the corrupt BN government,” he said.

Such statements are immature, he said, and it would perhaps be better if Mohd Amar (left) leave PAS instead of causing further rifts in the coalition.

“It is not PAS or DAP which must leave Pakatan, but maybe it is Mohd Amar who should leave PAS instead of staying on sullying good ties among coalition partners,” he said.

Yesterday, DAP’s Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang said he will boycott Pakatan Rakyat leadership meetings in view of Kelantan’s hudud plans.

The passing of amendments to the Kelantan syariah enactment enabling the hudud at Dec 29’s special sitting signifies the end of Pakatan, he said, as it means PAS acted without acknowledging its partners.

PAS and DAP's disagreement over the hudud crumbled the opposition pact Barisan Alternatif in 2011.

 

PAS central committee members said Kelantan PAS is acting without the central committee’s consent, but secretary-general Mustafa Ali said implementing the hudud is not against the Pakatan consensus.

Federation of Malaysia at stake
 
Meanwhile, DAP Sabah vice-chairperson Chan Foong Hin said Kelantan should not split the country with its hudud implementation.
 
Citing the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution which places “civil and criminal law and procedure and the administration of justice” under List I (Federal List), Chan said that any party wishing to unilaterally trigger a constitutional crisis should be warned about the consequences of such action.
 
“They must bear the full political responsibility for the disintegration of Malaysia.
 
“To tear apart the Ninth Schedule is to tear apart the Federal Constitution, which in turn is to tear apart the Federation of Malaysia,” he said in a statement.
 
The Sri Tanjong assemblyperson said although Kelantan had every right to demand for the implementation of hudud law, it must first seek a new federal constitution that gives more powers to the states.
 
“The complexity of having two criminal justice systems must be thoroughly thought out.
 
“PAS has every right to propose hudud, but please provide the detailed studies and insights beforehand,” he said.
 
Chan said any changes to the constitution would require the widest possible consultation with non-Muslims as well as intra-Muslim consultation.
 
Therefore, he said the Federal-Kelantan Joint Technical Committee and the Kelatan state government alone are not fit to decide on the implementation of state-level hudud law.
