PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan was today arrested for sedition over remarks he made on Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim's conviction.

Some 10 police personnel raided his house in Kajang this evening and seized his computer for investigations.

Speaking to Malaysiakini during the raid, Arutchelvan (below) said police will take him to the Dang Wangi police station.

Contacted later, PSM activist Kohila said Arutchelvan's mobile phone and modem have also been confiscated.

She said police are investigating Arutchelvan under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act.

Under the section, anyone who prints, publishes, sells, offers for sale, distributes or reproduces any seditious publication shall be guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine of up to RM5,000 or jail up to three years, or both.

"This is over Arutchelvan's statement that was released on the day Anwar was jailed," she said.

Vigil tonight

Arutchelvan had on Feb 10 issued a statement stating that Anwar's sentence to five years in prison for sodomy was "beyond reasonably doubt a political judgment".

Kohila said supporters will hold a vigil outside Dang Wangi district police headquarters tonight in support of Arutchelvan.

This is the second arrest made under the Act in relation to comments made over the Sodomy II verdict.

On Feb 11, political cartoonist Zunar was arrested for sedition over a tweet calling judges "lackeys in robes" following the verdict.

He was remanded for three days.

Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar also instructed investigations on PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli and Perak DAP  chief Nga Kor Ming over their respective tweets on the verdict.
