Dr Hasmah passes away at age 100

Dr Hasmah Ali, the wife of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, passed away today at the National Heart Institute (IJN).

She turned 100 on her birthday on July 12.

Bernama reported that her son, Mokhzani Mahathir, confirmed the passing.

Hasmah, better known as Siti Hasmah, was reportedly one of the first Malay women doctors when she began serving in the mid-1950s.

She has been married to Mahathir since 1956, and marked 70 years together in August.

They have seven children.

In 2024, Hasmah clarified during an interview that she never had the name "Siti", but that name was affixed to her by others due to the surging popularity of the name in the 1990s.

She then asked to be known as Dr Hasmah.
