YOURSAY ‘Do you know why tourism in Thailand is flourishing?’

Terengganu issues dress code for tourists

Anonymous #44199885: Syariah laws only apply to Muslims, so any Islamic dress code can only apply to Muslims. Non-Muslims are free to dress as they please otherwise the dress code is an infringement of the constitutional rights of non-Muslims.

Similarly asking non-Muslims to close shop during the Muslim prayer time is an infringement of non-Muslims right to their livelihood as the Muslim way of life and belief system does not apply to them.

Recent news from Terengganu seem to indicate an increased effort at Islamisation while at the same time attempting to push the boundaries to indirectly regulate the lives of non-Muslims under Islamic laws.

Both the dress code and the restriction of business hours seem to be examples of this. Is Terengganu a test bed of what is to come for the more cosmopolitan west coast, as well as Sabah and Sarawak?

TehTarik: The Terengganu government is elected by the people and has the right to implement a dress code. It is up to tourists to choose whether they want to visit Terengganu or not. No one is forcing them to visit the state.

If you do not want to adhere to the dress code, then please remove Terengganu from your itinerary. One can always visit Thailand which is a lot more promiscuous and liberal.

Maybe, Tourism Trengganu should promote itself to conservative Muslim nations like Saudi Arabia.

Dr Suresh Kumar: Tehtarik, you have a point there. In that case, please ask the PM, not to go around the world claiming Malaysia to be a moderate Islamic country, though we are not an Islamic country as such.

In Dubai, UAE, an Islamic country, many westerners and Hollywood actresses are frequenting their beaches wearing bikinis without facing any problems from the authorities, simply because the UAE government realised that, their men cannot be easily aroused by these bikini-clad women.

Hence, if the Terengganu men are weak and cannot control their sexual predatory nature, why blame the tourists who come there to enjoy the beaches and spend their dollars which would benefit the local economy? Why blame others for your own weakness?

David : Do you know why tourism in Thailand is flourishing? I will rather spend my money at an island resort there than having being told what I can or cannot wear here. Malaysia is turning into Afghanistan sooner than we can imagine.

MingXiang : Sorry girl, can't give you a lift to your workplace on my two wheeler. You're my girlfriend and all that, but we are not related . Better try walking.

Anonymous #559621516: While they are concerned about all these externals, they should also look into the issue of baby dumping in Terengganu.

Welfare Department statistics show that number of unwed mothers there is rather high with children having to face life-long social stigma as they cannot have their fathers’ name to their names.

Terengganu also has Malaysia's highest ‘mat rempit’ and alarmingly high drug addiction problems. Crime is high and drug addicts have reportedly attacked their own mothers when refused money for a fix.

Victims of the recent flood are still suffering from their loss and some even lost their homes. Divorce rate leading to broken homes and delinquent children is growing.

Why not try to improve all these first before being concerned about what tourists wear? Closure of shopping malls on Friday afternoon would mean massive traffic jams when everyone goes to the malls/restaurants at the same time.

P Dev Anand Pillai: This happens to be a state controlled by the BN. MCA shouts about the DAP not having any principles and guts to put PAS in its place for its attempt to introduce hudud laws in Kelantan, now what are they going to do about Terengganu?

Smallbigblob: Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang, where are you? Go show your rabbit fangs to the BN government, and do not forget to convince your MCA colleagues to join you.

MB: No new dress code for tourists in T'ganu

AkuMelayu-Tetapi ABU Jugak: The damage is already done. No bikini-clad white girls are going to Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian. So the beach boys there will continue to suck turtle eggs for a living.

Liew Lean Kut: Malaysian women must use their votes to vote these MCP (male chauvinist pigs) out in the state and federal election.

Only they themselves can end the discrimination against women.

Anonymous_3e06: There must be a lot of counsellors who don’t have much to do - to provide counselling on from dressings to drugs.

We will burn hell for wrong dressing. Wrong dressing according to whom?

Antibody: To Terengganu MB Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, don't let the opinion of one man (DAP leader Lim Guan Eng) change your akidah.
