MPs were up in arms in the wee hours of Thursday when the government yet again tabled a motion to drag Dewan Rakyat proceedings beyond midnight, this time to push through multiple bills.

This is the second time this week that a sitting is extended past midnight. The Prevention of Terrorism Act (Pota ) was passed at 2.25am on Tuesday.

Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj (PSM-Sungai Siput) told Deputy Speaker Ronald Kiandee Thursday’s extension infringes his rights to responsibly perform his duties as a lawmaker.

"I believe this is an insult [...] My duties are affected," he said.

He said this when asking Kiandee who he should name in his complaint under Standing Order 80(a) over what the MP said is an insult to proceedings.

“Should I cite Labis for tabling the bill or Arau as minister in charge of Parliament?” he asked.

He was referring to Labis MP and Deputy Finance Minister Chua Tee Yong (right) who tabled the Security Commissions Bill and Arau MP and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim who tabled the motion to stop the Parliament clock and extend the sitting past midnight.

The sitting was extended to table the Aviation Commission Bill, Securities Commision Bill, Capital Markets and the Anti-Human Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Amendment) Bill.

However, the Anti-Human Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (Amendment) Bill, Capital Markets (Amendments) Bill 2015 and Retirement Fund (Amendments) Bill 2015 were at 1.50 am deferred by the goverment without explanation.

Responding to Jeyakumar, Kiandee said the sitting is not an insult to the House as it is according to standing orders.

He reminded the MPs that most voted in favour of Shahidan’s motion to extend the sitting to the small hours.

Backing Michael Jeyakumar, Tian Chua (PKR-Batu) said: “This is not about standing orders, but about responsibility [...] to pass a bill properly.”

This failed to convince Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling), who said that those who do not want to stay are free to leave.

“The government side works hard,” his colleague Ahmad Hamzah (BN-Jasin) quipped.

'Wear us out before Sedition Act debate'

Khalid Samad (PAS-Shah Alam) (left) rebutten him by saying that it is "not about working hard, but working smart".

"Not do sloppy work like this," he said.

PAS’ Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Baharin Shah Raja Ahmad was equally fuming.

"We will probably finish at 4 or 5 am and tomorrow we start at 10am to debate the critical Sedition Act (amendment bill) which will affect all our lives.

"We’ll be too tired to debate tomorrow. That’s what they want. To wear us out!" he fumed in a text message to Malaysiakini .

"What quality debate do you get from tired mind and body?" he asked.

The sitting was adjourned at close to 2 am.
