MACC’s job is to probe the unusually rich

YOURSAY ‘Tell me how Rosmah was able to get her Birkin bags?’

'MACC can't probe PM's wealth based on suspicion'

DontPlayGod: You don't have to be in the police to understand that investigation begins firstly on suspicion. On investigation, if nothing suspicious is found, then the police move on to the next suspect.

The police’s job is to investigate all suspects. The operative word here is 'suspect'.

SteveOh: This is one of the worst misinformation I have ever come upon. All enforcement agencies work on various leads and one of the most common ways, for example, why the tax department gets on to a tax evader is not only what the dodger reports in his tax return but what is observed of his lifestyle and whether it commensurate with his income.

Often the tax department investigates someone on a tip-off. They gather information and build their case. But every investigation begins with a suspicion, a hunch, circumstantial evidence, a police report, and other sources.

Suggesting that Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) can't probe on suspicion is nonsense. The MACC called in Teoh Beng Hock to investigate his boss over a pittance.

Why can't the MACC do the same when someone's lifestyle suggests corruption? You can't get a conviction unless there is hard evidence, true, but the MACC can investigate on a whim and fancy like with opposition politicians and their business friends.

Dr Suresh Kumar: If two or three persons accuse PM Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, of wrongdoing, I can understand why there has been no investigation.

But we have reports after reports from many individuals, including TDM (Dr Mahathir Mohamad).

Furthermore, can't you see how this couple and Rosmah's son and his acquaintance Jho Low, are flaunting their riches?

MACC’s Corruption Prevention Advisory Panel member Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim, you may be sore with the way DAP treated you, but that does not mean you must lose sight of your objective to fight corruption and mismanagement of public monies.

Anonymous_3f4b: All the commenters in Malaysiakini are referring to what they have read in the social media regarding the so-called lavish lifestyle and imprudent spending of the prime minister and his wife.

But none offered any concrete evidence or lead for MACC to initiate investigation. Mere talk and suspicion is not enough.

Otherwise, MACC will have to investigate every complaint by any Tom, Dick and Harry. This may impede their limited investigative resources on other provable offences.

If any of the commenters have solid evidence, they can go to MACC instead of making unfounded allegations just because of their hatred for the leader of the serving government.

Odin: I remember a lot of people made negative comments about Tunku Abdul Aziz some two years ago. Now he has resurfaced.

To him, I say this: If your fish has gone missing and there is no probability of any living thing having swiped it except the cat, then you can punish it (the cat).

When someone lives beyond his means, you can investigate him or her. You are simply trying to avoid conducting a probe into the 'first family' of Malaysia.

Sirach: This is where the law needs to be reviewed. It should be incumbent on an elected official or civil servant with a lifestyle which is manifestly unsupportable by his known sources of income to account for his wealth.

The burden of proof must shift to him or her. It should be a question of guilty until proven innocent. That's the only way endemic corruption can be eliminated.

Cantabrigian: Tunku Abdul Aziz must either be dumb, blind or a total nutcase. This is not about suspicion or hunches.

Tell me how Rosmah was able to get her Birkin bags? She saved her money in a piggy bank since kindergarten? She got it as gifts from Umno contractors?

She bought them using ‘haram’ commission money from submarine contracts?

Abasir: Six personnel of the Royal Malaysian Navy in Lumut who flaunted their ill-gotten gains were pulled in.

But I guess the rule does not apply to Umno politicians who flaunt watches worth hundreds of thousands, buy US$100 million plus apartments or import cushion-cut diamonds worth tens of millions just for a look see.

Anticonmen: Tunku Abdul Aziz is the same man who repeatedly accused DAP of committing fraud in the recount of the ballots at the party polls in 2013 even when there was no evidence of any wrong done by DAP.

Malaysia Ku: Oh, what is there to probe if someone else does the work and produces the evidence for MACC? No reason for the MACC existence then, right?

But lack of evidence didn't stop them for initiating investigations immediately on the opposition on the flimsiest of police reports.
