When silence in Parliament is not golden

YOURSAY ‘Questions on 1MDB shouldn’t have been rejected by Parliament.’

Rafizi cannot pick PM's brain on 1MDB-TRX deal

Peacemaker: PKR MP Rafizi Ramli's questions were pertinent and of public interest. The rakyat are keen to know why the government sold the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) land at RM64 per square foot to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

If PM Najib Abdul Razak has nothing to hide, why avoid the issues? It is an insult to the august House.

It is no longer an issue for the opposition members; the majority of the rakyat are waiting for the prime minister to come clean on the matter. Or does he only prefer to explain behind closed doors to Umno division heads?

Vijay47: The confirmation on the matter of the selling price of RM64 can hardly be described as an opinion - it is a straightforward statement of fact. It falls under the category of "buah fikiran"?

But Rafizi's response to the rejection of his questions by the Parliament secretariat may not be appropriate - why ask questions of a prime minister who can proudly boast a Parliament attendance record of seven percent?

Similarly, Najib's advice to students to ask questions is exactly that - advice to students and not to be taken seriously by others. The real reason for the rejection of the questions is that Najib has neither "buah" nor "fikiran".

Tailek: Let's face it. No matter which way you ask, how many times you ask, no matter how you threaten, the prime minister will never release any information on the state of 1MDB.

The usual excuse is “wait for the auditor-general’s report”, which will probably gloss over the whole thing and say that everything followed proper procedures.

Malaysia Ku: Najib has never held question-and answer-sessions that required him to respond off the cuff.

Compare him with his counterpart down south and one can see the huge difference in quality, competency, and other attributes that make a good leader.

Najib is evasive and can't make an honest speech without his scriptwriters. And he needs people like the IGP and the parliamentary speaker to protect his incompetency.

Five Speed: Rafizi, who do you think you are to question Najib on when he will resign. And stop acting like you know everything on 1MDB.

Mamu Monster: Clarifications by 1MDB and auditors were made to cabinet. Money was brought back from the Cayman Islands with a profit.

But since Pakatan Rakyat doesn't want to believe this, it should then wait for the auditor-general's report.

Najib never said he was not accountable. He also said action would be taken if there is evidence of wrongdoing.

Don Forever: The opposition must be dreaming, blaming 1MDB to gain cheap attention from the rakyat.

We all know that 1MDB is on the right track. With investment from the international companies plus the value of the TRX properties, there is indeed a bright future for 1MDB.

AeGan King: It’s sad to see people here still believing the opposition - spreading negative allegations and baseless accusations on 1MDB issue.

Lend Lease, a giant international company in Australia, and the Mulia Group from Indonesia, have made the decision to invest in TRX. They look forward to, and are positive, on their investments.

Not Convinced: The issue is why the government short-changed the rakyat by selling the TRX land to 1MDB at a bargain-basement price?

In other countries, land belonging to the government is sold to the highest bidder and thus making the process transparent and to ensure the money raised is equal to or higher than the appraised value.

Rupert16: It looks like Najib has a lot of things to hide regarding 1MDB as he is trying to dodge being questioned in Parliament.

Wira: Even the Parliament cannot get Najib to respond. Only former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad can. That's why he is very important to the people of Malaysia.

Doc: Better check if Najib has a brain to pick, Rafizi. Najib has given no clear indication on how he is going to pay 1MDB’s next interest payment due in September nor has he indicated how he is going to repay the RM42 billion debts.

The only thing he has firmly indicated is that he wants to continue as PM. Obviously in Najib's case ‘silence is golden’ is not an option.

Ramesh Rajaratnam: This is the stupidest response from the august House on the rejection.

Since when can't the prime minister give his opinion, especially under parliamentary immunity? This should be published in all newspapers.

Abasir: That's so unfair, Rafizi. You should know better than to ask the country's most scripted and rehearsed prime minister for an opinion, especially one who creates his own FAQs (frequently asked questions) and answers them all by himself.

How on earth can he manage an opinion without his consultants and say something off the cuff? So play by the rules, okay? This is not Westminster.
