Suhaizan urges Hadi to return civility to PAS polls

In an apparent swipe at the “extreme” elements in PAS, its youth chief has urged the party president to take the lead in inculcating a gentlemanly and moderate approach to politics.

Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat ( photo ) in what appears to be his campaign manifesto, today said Hadi Awang should do this by educating party members on how to manage differences in opinion.

This, he said in a statement on WhatsApp , should be done through a nadwah fiqh (seminar on differences of opinion), to 'ease the increasing internal politics' plaguing the Islamic party as its party polls draw near.

“This seminar would expose participants to the proper etiquette of managing differences in opinion.”

“The attendance of delegates nationwide would be a good sign that there is light at the end of the tunnel for those who want an approach to politics that is civil, that is moderate politics, in PAS,” he said.

This comes after his rival for his present post Nik Abduh Nik Aziz declined an invitation to engage in a debate with him for the party elections.

The run up to the coming PAS muktamar has been marred by perhaps the fiercest infighting and smear campaigns seen in recent times.

Months earlier, glossy booklets were circulated picking on each of the prominent progressive leaders in PAS’ top ranks, calling them 'parasites'.

One of the victims, Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, struck back calling the perpetrators of the smear campaign “PAS Xtreme”.

‘Winning should be focus’

Suhaizan also made a veiled rebuttal to conservative party leaders who had said winning isn’t important to the party.

He said on the contrary, he intends to lead PAS Youth to be a “generation of winners” to topple the embattled Umno-BN at the next general election, through Pakatan Rakyat.

“Developments in our politics show an increasingly strong force calling for change in the replacement of the Umno-BN regime.

“Umno-BN has been in power long enough. A regime that rampantly squeezes our nation’s resources until we are neck-deep in national and household debt, and which has brought our moral values down to its lowest is frightening,” he said.

With the current internal war raging in Umno, said Suhaizan, Umno will go into the 14 th general election 'wounded'.

“The people will continue to reject BN in the coming general election, and God willing, Pakatan Rakyat will be the people’s choice,” he said.

In this respect, the incumbent youth chief said the wing under his care will not be just a 'passenger' but be an active participant towards effecting change.

He said therefore every PAS Youth member should sow the spirit of winning in their hearts to ready themselves for the next national polls.

“This is in fact what should be our focus,” he said.
