'Wrong to prioritise winning over Islam'

It's wrong to prioritise victory over Islam, said PAS central committee member Nasrudin Hassan, in a veiled swipe at the pro-Pakatan faction in PAS, at the Federal Territories PAS muktamar in Kuala Lumpur today.
He said this was against the teachings of Islam and unbecoming of the Islamist party.
"There are those who are so eager to win that they will say, 'It is okay to sacrifice Islam as long as we win'.
"We struggle to replace ignorance with Islam, not to introduce a new form of ignorance after we have had Islam.
"Those who say that they should win first and then only think of Islam are wrong. This is against the sunnah," he said.
His comments come as the date for PAS central committee polls in June draws ever nearer.
However analysts have told Malaysiakini that the pro-Pakatan faction is expected to lose heavily in the elections.
'PAS not a political party'
Nasrudin said differences in the party is not driven by ideological differences.
"The main reason for conflicts in the party is not ulamas versus the professionals. But it is because of the definition of PAS.
"There are those who mistakenly believe PAS is a political party.
"Which is why when it comes to Islam (those who think PAS is a party will say), if we speak about hudud, (if we speak) about implementing Islamic law, people won't support us.
"(But) PAS is an Islamic movement, and politics is only part of our responsibilities," he said.
Nasrudin, however, denied his speech was aimed at the pro-Pakatan faction when asked at a later press conference.
"This is just a general reminder to all," he told reporters.
Nasrudin who is also the Temerloh MP, said PAS position in Pakatan may be one of the hot topics at this year's muktamar in June.
"Among Internal issues (that may be discussed) include PAS position within Pakatan, as well as the party's direction and current strategies.
"External issue will be current affairs such as the goods and services tax, 1Malaysia Development Bhd and so on," he said.
The central PAS muktamar will be held from June 4 till 6, in Kuala Selangor.
