PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim has been warded at the Kuala Lumpur general hospital but is unlikely to undergo surgery, said his wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Speaking to reporters after spending about an hour with Anwar, Wan Azizah said her husband will undergo several more test, among others, for complaints of nagging pain on his shoulder.

"He is stable, he will undergo a lot of tests after this, such as an MRI scan for his right shoulder and a endoscope for suspected bleeding even though the blood test results show that his is quite stable.

"At the moment, I think surgery is not on the cards. Although it is quite a chronic problem and (doctors) say surgery is probably not the answer," said Wan Azizah, who is a trained obstetrician and ophthalmologist.

Prison authorities sent Anwar to the hospital this morning following complaints by his family on his deteriorating health. Wan Azizah and her four children arrived at the hospital at 6pm.

Anwar in good spirits

Wan Azizah said she was satisfied with the doctor's assessment and that Anwar was in high spirits, despite suffering from pain and severe weight loss.

"He was happy to see his family... He is holding up and in good spirit, but he needs more observation and medical care," she said.

The prison authorities have told her that Anwar will be warded until Friday for observation.

Meanwhile, Anwar's eldest daugther Nurul Izzah told reporters that the authorities must upgrade medical facilities in prisons to ensure that sick prisoners receive adequate medical attention.

"This is an issue that we have to tackle," said Nurul Izzah, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP.

However, she noted that the prisons department are doing the best they can with what they have.
